Having been to a screening of this film in its early days in Cardiff, it is good to see the short film/documentary receive well deserved acclamations and go on to be screened at bigger stages. It is a heart felt, emotional and thought provoking piece of work, with some amazing historical footage. The documentary, titled 'Comrade President', critically does away with investigating the cause of Machel's untimely death when his plane plummeted into the dense, mountainous terrain bordering Mozambique, Swaziland and South Africa. Instead, the film looks at a charismatic leader, thrust into spearheading a revolution to liberate his country from Portuguese rule in the 1970's. This historical portrait provides insight into the complex challenge of leadership and the journey to freedom through Samora Machel's life. A must see for anyone interested in African liberation and its history.
