In a interview with Collider in November 2014, Guillermo del Toro talked about setting the stage for Pacific Rim 2 (2017), stating, "It's a few years after the first one. It's not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after -- what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It's quite a jump." del Toro did not return to direct Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018).
When Newton activates the drone subroutine, the screen displays the name of the protocol as CMD LIMA VICTOR 426, as a nod to the movie Aliens, where most of the action takes place on a moon called LV-426.
During an interview with Collider in November 2014, Guillermo del Toro stated that Charlie Day's character, Dr. Newton Geiszler, and Burn Gorman's character, Gottlieb, are in the sequel with the respective actors (Day and Gorman) reprising their roles from Pacific Rim (2013) for the sequel. del Toro commented on it, stating, "Yes. It's quite a different movie from the first one in that, but I think that two of our main characters like in the first one are Burn and Charlie. They are really, really -- I mean, honestly, they are probably the guys I have the most fun writing, along with Hannibal Chau, so just from a purely selfish drive, I like writing them. I love writing for Charlie and Burn. I mean, [Hunnam] in Crimson Peak (2015) for that reason, because I love working with him."
James Gunn filmed a cameo as a DJ, but it ended up being deleted from the finished movie. Gunn joked on Twitter that the scene was omitted so that his character could be saved for his own spin-off movie.

The conscripted scavenger character, Amana Namani, played by actress Cailee Spaeny, innovatively pilots her self-made Jaeger, that has the call sign "Scrapper," a term very aptly used from orthodox western boxing, which describes a fighter that is small in stature but has strong willpower. These attributes are frequently shown or referenced during the movie.
Director's commentary: the bots that stitch MegaKaijju together are called "rippers" because they rip apart the kaiju to create a new form. The director also says he had no idea how to do this so it is very hard to see.
Despite being heavily advertised in the trailers, Obsidian Fury only appears in two scenes. In Sydney where it kills Mako and fights Gipsy Avenger, forced to retreat after other jaegers were about to be deployed, and in Siberia where it destroys an old jaeger factory, fights with Gipsy Avenger again and has its power core ripped out.
Foreshadowing - At one point, Cadet Suresh indicates how he would like to be honored when he dies and the other cadets joke about how many Jaegers will be at his funeral. During the final battle with the Mega Kaiju, Suresh is the only cadet to lose his life. Ironically, his Jaeger, Guardian Bravo, is the only Jaeger that wasn't completely destroyed or dismembered during the battle.
Of the four Mark-6 Jaegers, Titan Redeemer is the only one to not participate in the fight against Raijin, Hakuja, and Shrikethorn due to it being destroyed during the kaiju controlled jaegers attack on the shatterdome.
The giant kaiju made of the several smaller ones resembles Slattern, the largest Category 5 kaiju from Pacific Rim (2013). They used their tails to damage Jaegers. Slattern used its tail to hit Striker Eureka's chest and to stab Gipsy Danger's back while the giant kaiju used its tail to rip Saber Athena's leg off and throw it into a building. The kaiju also used their environment to damage Jaegers. Slattern shoved Striker Eureka into massive ocean rocks, while the giant kaiju shoved Guardian Bravo into several skyscrapers.
For Gispy Avenger's Chain Sword, unlike Gipsy Danger, in the first film, who was able to activate 2 Chain Swords, Gipsy Avenger, on the other hand, appears to only have one and can only be available to activate on the Jaeger's left arm.
