Don't mess with something that is sacred...

The problem with this movie is that it goes in a complex and jumbled direction and some parts of it lead to hardly anything all that effective. The cinematography and acting is good and some parts are just cruel which leaves a bit of a impression on how things worked during the Joseon Dynasty. When it comes to males their manhood means just about everything to them(well for most men at least) and their pride comes from the length of it all. Even when they compete it comes down to their ego which is basically a penis measuring competition. The plot contrived of something more than what it is. And when it comes down to it the moral of this movie is to never mess with a man's penis or you will face the consequences. As comedic as that sounds that is basically the message of this movie although everything is a bit jumbled. Besides the penis aspect of it all it sort of reminded me of the 2010 Korean movie "The Servant" which Jo Yeo-Jeong who is the lead actress in this was part of. Because both movies are erotic and sexual while dealing with the distance a man would go for their love or the person they lust over. While also dealing with a person that is constantly getting in the way of if all. So the plot in this is basically about a woman that tries to save his lover's life when they decided to run away together and get caught. And thus she volunteers to become a concubine for the king in order to save her lover's life. But soon a bunch of conspiracies happen in the palace when the king passes away and the prince is in love well in lust over the concubine way before she became a concubine and finds her in the palace before the king's death. And during the conspiracy the queen who is very cruel and cold gets involved as well. And there is constant arguing and conflict between the selfish prince and the tyrant queen because of the concubine. And later the concubine finds her previous lover but is shocked to know he has become a eunuch. So yeah this movie is quite a plot but besides few slightly shocking and erotic scenes nothing really makes this movie stand out. After the movie is finished nothing much about is memorable and the plot just doesn't stick. The plot isn't bad, in fact some parts of it is actually quite well written but there really isn't anything special about it and is unfocused as times. When it comes down to the core of it all besides the whole penis thing, is that just about all the characters in this act for their own self interest...I guess somethings never change. I give this movie a 6 because the climax slightly upgraded this movie.

This is not an erotic film

The previous reviewer dwelled on the penis thing and the erotic aspect of this film, but I think he, along with many others, missed the point. It's partly the fault of the advertising campaign, which I understand emphasized Jo YeoJung's (as well as other actors') nude scenes -- but I don't know how anyone can still retain the impression that this movie is an erotic bodice-ripper after actually watching it. This is a dark, perilous journey through the obsessions and grudges of people who cannot stop running lest they fall behind, and the sweat is all of the cold kind.

The said scenes involving nudity and sexuality are not in the least erotic, nor did I find Kim DongWook's reaction to the coitus-by-the-book(literally) as the hapless young king at all comedic, intentionally or otherwise; rather he did a fine job of assaying a pathetic and desperate character trapped in an intolerable situation, and his mental near-collapse was almost palpable. And the supporting characters' stories did not interfere with the unfolding of the main plot for me -- they were not subplots so much as back stories for the characters' motivations, and served to flesh out, not complicate, the plot.

Aside from the mostly fine direction and the acting -- which latter ranged from decent (in a few cases) to very good (mostly) -- for me the art direction and cinematography were particular standouts. While most historical epics tend to emphasize sumptuous costumes and the splendor of the architecture and ornamentation, this movie did the opposite; while it is visually rich in its own, gloom-laden way, everything in it is in dark, muted colors as if it were dyed with tea, the ladies wear little jewelry and the sets are kept very lean, to sometimes very striking, almost expressionistic, effect, as when HwaYeon's maid is assigned new, better quarters of her own after catching the King's eye, but the room is entirely empty, and the woman is shown laughing in semi-hysterical self-congratulation on a tiny mat on an otherwise bare floor.

There are many, many scenes shot at very close range, often lit by simulated candlelight at night, creating an overall claustrophobic feel that visually replicates the suffocating atmosphere of the intrigue-riddled court these people endured. Fittingly, the scenes of violence are presented suddenly and starkly, with minimal cues in the soundtrack, which makes them all the more shocking yet realistic.

While not exactly a masterpiece, this movie is a well-thought out and well-executed production, much superior to the kind of titillating fluff it is made out to be by some. It definitely deserves a thoughtful watch.

Hard to follow the story got lost fast

Things jump quickly from one thing to another and it was hard to follow what was going on. Felt like a series on fast forward. Just couldn't keep up with the different characters. Why they did what they did isn't explained well.

Very Good Film Destroyed by Technical Issue

This is probably a good, or maybe even great, movie. I struggled through the entire thing. I am a native English speaker with a Masters degree ... I CAN read English. The sub titles appear on the screen and are gone too fast for anyone to completely read. Countless times I had to stop the film and skip back to read the subtitle. It was IMPOSSIBLE to take in the subtitle content and to appreciate the beautiful photography. The subtitle appeared on the screen as the actor began to speak and then immediately disappeared as their line was finished. Leaving the subtitle up for perhaps another 5 seconds, as in other subtitled movies (and I watch a lot of them), would have solved the problem. Such a shame to ruin a beautiful film with such a stupid technical error.

Not The Movie I Was Expecting

You would think this movie is solely a movie about two guys wanting the same woman and being willing to do anything to have her. While this is a part of the film it is only a small part of a much larger drama that has much more to do with mothers.

The title is a bit confusing and I can only assume that it was named such due to a "Spilling the Beans" moment in the film. There is sex but not in the volumes that one might expect by the title.

The acting was quite well and I could really feel the emotional energy from the female characters coming through. It was filmed well but the scripting was convoluted in places and could've been delivered just as well with a few things omitted.

Overall, I enjoyed the film. I liked our female characters and the obsessive nature, be it fueled by jealousy, lust or revenge, of the males. Glad I found and watched it and I will be recommending it as a nice work of dramatic historical fiction.

The Concubine: A deadly power game in the palace

Unlike the recent South Korean period dramas, the movie has a notable anachronistic feeling. It seems its background is the Joseon dynasty(1392-1910) considering the design of architectures in the film, but there is also the influences from the Goryeo dynasty(918-1392) in the characters' costumes and other details. They behave like the people living during the Joseon dynasty, but, as far as I know, there was not any incident during that period which can possibly inspire the lurid story of the film, and I have never heard about the king's mother presiding over the copulation ritual of her son and daughter-in-law in the next room.

But, despite its fictional world, the ruthless pursuit of power in the palace is a familiar story you have encountered in other stories. The king is dead due to an unidentified cause, and the king's mother(Park Ji-yeong), who is actually his stepmother, now holds the power to decide who will be the next king. She quickly puts her own son, Prince Seong- won(Kim Dong-wuk), on the throne, and she also swiftly eliminates her opponents including the previous king's father-in-law.

In such a circumstance like that, the previous king's wife, Hwa-yeon(Cho Yeo-jeong), naturally has lots of worry about not only her future and but also her young son's future. He is just a child at present, but this innocent kid is already deemed as a potential threat to the kingship, and he can be killed at any time if the king's mother and her followers have a chance to get a good reason for that. Some of South Korean audiences have never heard of Lady MacBeth or Richard III, but they will be reminded of several bloody incidents during the Joseon dynasty or other dynasties preceding that. King Danjong of the Joseon dynasty was dethroned by his uncle, who became the next king, and then this young boy was killed later when he was thought to be too much of trouble(believe or not, it was said that this horrific decision was strongly supported by his great uncle). In case of Prince Young-Chang, he was murdered by King Gwanghaegun of the Joseon dynasty just because he was a more legitimate heir to the throne than the king himself. Anything could be committed for absolute power in those days, you know.

Unlike his ruthless mother, Prince Seong-won has other thoughts about his sister-in-law, and we know why. While he was merely a prince, he met her in her father's house, and he has been obsessed with her since then. His mother already sets him up with the other woman as his queen when he becomes the king, but he still wants Hwa-yeon in spite of his mother's warning. It may be not that bad to sleep with the deceased brother's wife(well, he is the king, isn't he?), but it can be fatal to sleep with someone who can threaten the power.

The situation becomes more complicated after another player of this dangerous game of palace intrigue appears in the palace. His name is Kwon-yoo(Kim Dong-wuk), who was Hwa-yeon's former lover in the past. When he tried to elope with Hwa-yeon before she was sent to the place as the previous king's new wife, he was captured and castrated by Hwa- yeon's father, and now he enters the palace as one of new eunuchs. While he is quickly promoted enough to be near the king, he becomes also a little closer to Hwa-yeon though he lacks a certain body part crucial for rekindling their feelings in the past. Can she trust him as a close ally? And does she really have some feelings for him as he guesses?

You never can be sure about them because of the understated but competent performances by Jo Yeo-jeong and Kim Min-joon. Revealing real feelings in the palace can be a fatal blow to your fate, and they must hide their emotions and thoughts as much as possible to survive. Jo Yeo- jeong is good as a woman who gradually becomes as ruthless and cunning as her enemies through her need to survive. When she comes to know that the king wants her, she see it as an opportunity to win the game, and she is determined to manipulate him to turn against her devious mother- in-law.

Meanwhile, clueless and reckless Guem-OK(Cho Eun-ji), a maid who has served for Hwa-yeon, finds herself in a serious situation way over her head. She is forced to copulate with the king when he is very frustrated over his desire toward Hwa-yeon, and we can say that she is virtually raped, but, what do you know, she feels a lot better to see her changed position as one of the king's concubines. Unfortunately, while intoxicated with her newly gained power, she does not have the slightest idea about how dangerous the power game can be between the women in the palace.

The king's mother is the most powerful and dangerous player in this perilous game, and Park Ji-young gives a juicy villainous performance which ably supplies grand gestures whenever they are required. The king's mother has probably done many terrible things for protecting his son and making the throne ready for him, but it is not easy for her to resist the power behind the throne – and now her dear son is becoming one of the major blocks in her grand plan.

Intriguing ...

One might say there is a pun in my summary line ... maybe even two. That aside, the movie is really tight when it comes on the story. It is quite fast paced all things considering and especially if you think about how much it does pack in.

Concubine may suggest some erotic encounters - and if that is what you think and expect you will not be dissapointed entirely. Just do not expect this to be focused on that. The scenes of sexual nature have a meaning to the story and to the characters. They also move along the story or plot lines.

Having said that, I guess this was discovered in the West because of the main actress being a part of Parasite. This goes to show you, there is much to find in Korean cinema that we haven't yet had a chance to view yet.

You may not like how characters act and what they decide to do. The questions if we couldn't just love each other instead of being so suspicious towards each other ... well you wouldn't have this tension filled movie otherwise now would you?

Korean Mama Sutra

Yeo Jeong Cho displays her body in a few surprisingly graphic sex scenes in Kama Sutra like positions. The story is a Borgia type one with an evil queen who rules with ruthlessness to further her control. Her son has no power and his queen, played by Cho, makes attempts to save her father and keep her son safe from the scheeming queen. The scenery is gorgeous and the film a great one.

Murder and Deceit in the Choson Dynasty

Set during the Choson Dynasty this film involves a young prince by the name of "Sungwon" (Dong-wook Kim) falling in love with a nobleman's daughter named "Hwa-Yeon" (Heo-heong Jo). Unfortunately, although she knows of Prince Sunwon's attraction for her, she has fallen in love with another young man by the name of "Kwon-Yoo" (Min-Joon Kim) instead. So one night, overcome by their devotion to each other, both Hwa-Yeon and Kwon-Yoo make the fateful decision to run away together rather than abide by custom or family tradition. Unfortunately, after sleeping together that night, they are caught the next morning and in a desperate effort to spare Kwon-Yoo's life, Hwa-Yeon tells her father that she will now consent to become Prince Sungwon's concubine. What she doesn't know is that, although her father agrees to spare his life, as a penalty for shaming the family Kwon-Yoo is castrated that very night. To make things even worse, when she arrives at the palace the "Queen Mother" (played by Ji-Young Park) takes an immediate dislike to her and does everything in her power to reduce Hwa-Yeon's status there from that point on. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that I was very impressed at the overall depth of this movie as the plot was extremely intricate and the acting was first-rate as well. Be advised, however, that there are a couple of very graphic sex scenes which definitely precludes this picture from being seen by a younger audience. Be that as it may, I thoroughly enjoyed this film and have rated it accordingly.

A gripping movie of obsession, revenge and betrayal.

This is a sequel to the 2010 movie, The Servant. The Servant is a rather simple movie, and the love story simple. This movie completely changes tone and mood, and you're immediately thrown into this new world. The cinematography is genius in it's minimalist nature, long wide shots to allow you be absorbed in the dire setting. The King was excellently played, his obsession driving him hysterical and he often is shown having out-bursts of anger. One of the most beautifully crafted scene in portraying his insanity is within a sex scene, the camera spinning around the room as you see shadows of the servants outside of it. I have to applaud his performance.

One striking feature is how the actors purposely are muted in their performance, no over-acting as most asian dramas have, and often the main lead looks upon her love interests with silent tears. The ending scenes are so perfectly crafted, and the ending makes you feel intrigued yet hallow. The whole movie shows a cycle in the royal palace and brutal it'll forever be.

In all, I hope you'll be as memorized by it as I was.

Left me feeling depressed...All the characters are bad people...

There's no one to root for in this movie. All the major players turn out to be selfish, evil and cruel in one way or another, at some point. Even when you think one of them is mostly good, they betray your expectations in the end. The Queen Mother is vile from the beginning until the very end, obviously, basically trying to have everyone important aside from her own son killed, but the former servant turned eunuch guy just let's his supposed love interest's (the Queen) father be innocently executed, in order to get revenge. The Queen herself kills the new king in the end, even though he tried to help her, and after manipulating the eunuch guy into helping her as well, at the cost of his life, she tells him before he dies from poison, that actually, her son is not his after all. Like, wtf? What was that for? I thought she was good for a while, but nope, guess not. Honestly, the puppet king is basically the closest thing to a good person you can find in the movie (aside from his murdered brother and former king, of course, who is actually a nice guy, but he gets killed fast) among the important characters; he has a bunch of faults (anger, lust, and honestly turning a bit insane at times, probably due to what he's been thrown into), and makes a bunch of mistakes, but the poor guy is decent at heart, and just gets manipulated by basically everyone, and for a long time doesn't even seem to have real power.

It just left a sour taste in my mouth by the end. Like, what was it all for? Who was I supposed to root for? No one? If so, what was even the point of it all? Oh, and don't let the title and movie poster fool you; there are a few graphic sex scenes in this, but that is not in any way, shape or form the main focus of the movie. This is a dark intrigue movie full of conspiracy, murder, and bad people.
