Before Abrams was hired again, Rian Johnson was also offered to be director after Trevorrow left, but he turned it down, as he felt he needed time off between The Last Jedi and his next project. It would later come to light that Johnson would be helming an entire trilogy of Star Wars movies, which would be more flexible in terms of the production process than tackling the follow-up to his Sequel Trilogy movie, and it gave him enough time to work on Knives Out, a separate, smaller project.
