Amelia Hicks and her husband, being penniless, enter the county poor house. Dad has been unable to work his little farm on account of paralysis. One day Amelia is ordered by the officials to report at the house of David Jarrow, a railroad engineer. His long runs only allow him to be home once a week and he desires an old woman to attend to his five-year-old daughter and help with the housework. Amelia is duly engaged, but soon finds out that she is a drudge and a nobody. Unhappy that she is separated from her old husband she decides to leave, and one morning when Mrs. Jarrow and the child have started to town in the two-horse wagon, Amelia takes her little bundle of belongings to walk back to the poor house. Presently she sees a sight that chills her blood. The horses in the wagonette have halted, and wrecked the vehicle right on the railroad track. She totters to the rescue, but finds herself unable to extricate the mother and child. She hears the toots of the engine with which David...
