Latino Stars Turn Out to Celebrate Rare Representation at ‘Overboard’ Premiere

Latino Stars Turn Out to Celebrate Rare Representation at ‘Overboard’ Premiere
The premiere of “Overboard” Monday night in Westwood Village served as one of the few moments for Latinos to gather and celebrate a rare breed of film: one featuring a Latino male lead.

As the box-office continues to be dominated by films featuring diverse casts and storytellers, Eugenio Derbez occupies a lonely perch in Hollywood as one of the few Latino actors who has starred in a wide-release film. A 2017 USC study found that Latinos represented just 3% of speaking roles in the top 100 films of 2016.

Fans of the Mexican actor lined the red carpet at The Regency Village Theater and were overjoyed when he stopped to take pictures with them.

The red carpet featured stars like Eva Longoria, who also has a role in the film. Jaime Camil (“Jane the Virgin”) and Latin pop singer Prince Royce attended, as did a number of Latino celebrities like Alicia Machado.

Rude Awakenings: Crowdfunding Picks

Sirens

When life hands you lemons, go find a life coach who moonlights as a mermaid. Well, at least that’s the conceit of one of our latest crowdfunding picks. Mermaids aside, all of our picks — which include two short films and two documentary features — all capture how one gathers the courage to respond when life delivers a rude awakening.

In the case of “Being Bebe,” director Emily Branham takes us inside the ups and down of adjusting to life after drag queen stardom on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Meanwhile, writer-director Jo Rochelle’s short film “Sirens” sees mermaids helping a grieving mother cope after her unarmed son becomes a victim of a police shooting.

Award-winning filmmaker Rachel Lears’ documentary “Knock Down the House” puts a human face on the record-breaking numbers of women running for public office in response to Trump’s presidential win by following four women from

‘Chips’ Star Jessica McNamee on Dax Shepard’s Surprising ‘Serious’ Side (Video)
Australian actress Jessica McNamee has no trace of an accent in Friday’s police comedy romp “Chips,” where she plays an all-American highway patrol officer. She had high praise for Dax Shepard, who made his directorial debut on the project as well as starring and writing the script. “He wore quite a few hats,” McNamee said. “He was a bit more serious, I think, than in his regular life.” The star of USA’s “Sirens” has quite a few impressive projects booked in addition to the Friday release from Warner Bros. Oliver attempts to maintain his optimism in the face of real world loss in Arrow's midseason premiere...

This review contains spoilers.

See related Spectre: one year on, where's it left the James Bond series?

5.10 Who Are You?

It’s weird for a show to feel like it’s in a huge transition five seasons in, but that’s where we’re at with Arrow. I have been happier with this season than any other, but for some reason it struck me early in tonight’s episode how incredibly gloomy this show is. Even when it’s trying not to be (and it was working hard at that tonight), it’s still grim and pitch black compared to the rest of the CW DC shows. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just a little jarring when you go from watching a gaggle of people
