An amusing amateur horror film
29 December 2012 | by RymdkejsarenSee all my reviews

Shoggoth is the first film of amateur film-makers Martin Strauss and Jens Wadenius, who started the project without any skill or experience in the field. Despite this they have managed to produce an almost hour-long film that keeps the viewers in their seats and even has them laughing along the way.

The film is inspired by the H.P. Lovecraft mythos, and the cinematography and storytelling is reminiscent of 80's low budget horror films like The Evil Dead. It is a film that does not take itself seriously and therefore it is easier to forgive the many flaws that inevitably plague an amateur project with an extremely low budget.

The production has many problem areas including sound and picture quality, camera work, pacing, continuity and special effects. Yet these very flaws lend the film a certain charm and it is also notable that a lot of classic mistakes and pitfalls made by amateur film-makers are avoided.

The amateur cast offer mediocre performances overall, with the shining exception of Julius Tyrling who carries much of the film with his quirky, overacted nice-guy performance. Another big positive is the well-made musical soundtrack, without which the film would have suffered greatly.

These are the tentative first steps of two amateur film makers that show potential promise for future projects.
