Will Captain Marvel Hold Strong Against Wonder Park and Captive State This Weekend?

Last weekend, Marvel gave the box office a much-needed shot in the arm with Captain Marvel, which brought in a truly impressive $153.4 million domestically, on its way to a $455 million global opening. The hot streak for Marvel Studios is set to continue as their newest hero will once again win the weekend as a trio of newcomers will fall well short of taking the box office crown. This weekend's new releases include Paramount's Wonder Park, Lionsgate's Five Feet Apart and Focus Features' Captive State.

Captain Marvel, which comes from directing duo Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, will easily win its second weekend at the box office. The question is, by how much? Either way, it's going to be a landslide, but it's a matter of how steep the drop off is going to be. Estimates have its total landing between $70 and $85 million, which is a pretty major difference.

Captain Marvel Soars to Record Breaking Box Office Debut with $455M Worldwide

Captain Marvel Soars to Record Breaking Box Office Debut with $455M Worldwide
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has another hit on its hands. Captain Marvel, which stars Brie Larson, was easily able to take the number one spot at the box office this weekend with an impressive $153 million domestic haul. However, it's the global numbers that make the Carol Danvers standalone movie the highest grossing debut for a female-led movie of all time, both worldwide and domestically, thanks to earning $455 globally. The movie easily beats the previous record, which was Disney's live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast with $357 million. Additionally, the Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure now has the record for second-largest global debut of a comic book adaptation behind Avengers: Infinity War at $640.5 million. Domestically, Captain Marvel easily beat Wonder Woman's $103 million for highest domestic opening of a female-led movie.

Captain Marvel was also the latest victim of review bombing on Rotten Tomatoes earlier this week from trolls who were trying

How to Train Your Dragon 3 Soars to 2nd Weekend Box Office Win with $30M

DreamWorks has reason to celebrate as How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World has come out on top of the competition at the box office for the second weekend in a row. The third entry in the studio's very popular and successful franchise brought in $30 million in its second frame to pretty easily best this weekend's newcomers. The Dean DeBlois-directed finale to the epic animated trilogy has now already grossed $375 million worldwide, which puts it on track to possibly best the total grosses of its predecessors.

As expected, Tyler Perry's a Madea Family Funeral, which is positioned as the final entry in his long-running movie series centered on the popular Madea character, landed in the number two spot. The movie did slightly better than expected, bringing in $27 million. Perry has proved time and time again over the years that his built-in audience will show up and the

Will A Madea Family Funeral Bury the Box Office Competition This Weekend?

Last weekend saw DreamWorks close out one of their most beloved franchises in style with How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, which earned a very solid $55 million opening frame haul. Things are looking good for Hiccup and Toothless, as the third entry in the acclaimed animated franchise is likely to repeat at the top of the box office. This weekend sees Tyler Perry's a Madea Family Funeral debut, which will end Tyler Perry's long-running series, as well as the horror/thriller Greta.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World has been bolstered by very solid reviews and that solid buzz should help carry it to a number one finish again this weekend. The sequel, directed by Dean DeBlois, is looking at a second frame haul in the $30 to $35 million range, depending on how steep the week-to-week drop off is. Either way, that will be more than

How to Train Your Dragon 3 Storms Weekend Box Office with $55.5M Win

DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World easily took the number one spot this weekend while giving the box office a solid boost. The $55.5 million debut is a franchise best and pretty rare for the third part in a trilogy. However, strong reviews and an "A" grade from Cinemascore have definitely helped out the third and final movie in the franchise. Worldwide, The Hidden World has earned $274.9 million. This year has been off to a sluggish start at the box office and the CGI family movie has gone a long way in helping those numbers, which will get an even bigger boost when Captain Marvel debuts in a few weeks.

James Cameron's Alita: Battle Angel held strong at number two this weekend, having earned $12 million. Overseas, the long-awaited movie has fared much better and has brought the global total to $263.3 million. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

'How to Train Your Dragon 3' Debuts with Franchise Best, $55.5 Million Debut

'How to Train Your Dragon 3' Debuts with Franchise Best, $55.5 Million Debut
The 2019 box office has finally received a jolt of energy with an impressive, $55.5 million debut for DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. The performance led the weekend box office, closing out the final weekend within what has been a rough start to the first two months at the domestic box office this year. The weekend also saw MGM's expansion of Fighting with My Family, which debuted at the lower end of industry expectations, while Roadside's Run the Race found itself within the top ten from just 853 locations. With an estimated $55.5 million, Universal's release of the DreamWorks Animation title How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World delivered not only the #1 movie at this weekend's box office, but the largest debut of the year so far, surpassing Glass by more than $15 million. The opening is also the largest debut in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise,

The Casual Cinecast reviews the Oscar nominated film Shoplifters; talks Alita: Battle Angel, Oscars changes & more!

  • Cinelinx
At the last minute, the Casual Cinecast changed their main review from Alita: Battle Angel, to the Oscar nominated film Shoplifters. However, if you watched the wrong movie, don't worry! There is still a lengthy discussion on Alita: Battle Angel, and much more! There's also a follow-up conversation regarding the most recent changes to the Academy Awards broadcast for 2019 we discussed last week!

As always, before moving into the main review for Shoplifters, there's a "What's On Our Mind?" section, where each host goes over the media they've been consuming over the last week! This week Mike watched the new Netflix dramedy show Russian Doll, starring Natasha Lyonne. Meanwhile Chris continues his theatrical journey through Akira Kurosawa films, with a conversation about a screening of Ran. Listen, as that makes Mike and Justin both very jealous.

Also, Justin and Chris both saw the new romantic comedy, Isn't it Romantic, starring Rebel Wilson and Liam Hemsworth.

Can How to Train Your Dragon 3 Save the Sinking Box Office?

Can How to Train Your Dragon 3 Save the Sinking Box Office?
Last weekend, Alita: Battle Angel surprised analysts by topping the long, holiday weekend box office with $35.5 million over the four-day stretch. Its reign atop the box office will be very short-lived, as How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is swooping in and looks to draw a big crowd this weekend. Additionally, the (almost) always reliable Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is bringing his latest, Fighting With My Family, to the nation after opening very strong in limited released last weekend.

DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, the third entry in their very popular and beloved franchise, will win the weekend, with box office projections placing it at around $40 million on the low end and $45 million on the higher end of things. That is right in line with the previous two entries and represents a solid start for the conclusion to this series. This movie, which comes from director Dean DeBlois,

Alita: Battle Angel Wins Less Than Stellar Holiday Box Office Weekend

Alita: Battle Angel Wins Less Than Stellar Holiday Box Office Weekend
Director Robert Rodriguez's Alita: Battle Angel debuted at number one this weekend, having earned $27.8 million domestically. The long holiday numbers will be in on Monday morning, but it still isn't looking good for the long-awaited James Cameron-produced project. Worldwide, Alita: Battle Angel has brought in $130.8 million. The movie came in slightly higher than initial estimates, but it also cost quite a bit to make and years of development. It has been reported that the movie cost $170 million to produce, which does not factor in marketing.

Taking the second spot this weekend is The Lego Movie 2, which is in its second week. The sequel took in $21.1 million and has made $97.3 million globally thus far. With that being said, the Lego sequel has underperformed when compared to the 2014 original. At number three is Rebel Wilson's Isn't It Romantic with $14.2 million. The satirical take on the romantic comedy genre hit some

The 1 Endearing Way Liam Hemsworth Surprised Rebel Wilson in Isn't It Romantic

The 1 Endearing Way Liam Hemsworth Surprised Rebel Wilson in Isn't It Romantic
Romantic comedies aren't dead. While there has certainly been a drought of classics like You've Got Mail and Pretty Woman since the '90s and early 2000s, within the past year, films like Crazy Rich Asians, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, and all of Netflix's cheesy holiday films have breathed new life into rom-coms. And now, Isn't It Romantic is putting its own spin on the beloved genre.

The film centers on Natalie (Rebel Wilson), a pessimist about love, who finds herself living out her worst nightmare: she's trapped in her very own romantic comedy. Though the film - which also stars Liam Hemsworth, Adam DeVine, and Priyanka Chopra - pokes fun at the classic rom-com tropes (like the main character having a luxurious NYC apartment that she can't afford or people doing fully choreographed musical numbers at random moments), diehard rom-com fans will still fall in love with the movie.

Fox's 'Alita' Leads Worst President's Day Weekend in 15 Years

Fox's 'Alita' Leads Worst President's Day Weekend in 15 Years
The three-day President's Day weekend last year saw the top twelve gross over $270 million, the bulk of which was due to the over $202 million three-day opening for Black Panther, accounting for nearly 74% of the combined top twelve gross. This year didn't have such a monster release, and while expectations were muted, the top twelve's combined $109.1 million makes for the worst three-day President's Day weekend since 2004. Leading the charge was Fox's Alita: Battle Angel, delivering $27.8 million for the three-day. Elsewhere, while Universal's release of Blumhouse's Happy Death Day 2U fell short of expectations, it has already grossed more than its production budget and WB's release of New Line's Isn't It Romantic took advantage of Valentine's Day leading into the weekend and delivered a third place finish. Fox's Alita: Battle Angel topped the weekend box office with ease, outperforming expectations and delivering an estimated $27.8 million over the three-day weekend

Liam Hemsworth Almost Wasn't in The Last Song, and the Mere Thought Makes Us Shudder

They say there are no accidents in life, and we're inclined to believe that after watching Liam Hemsworth's interview on Today on Friday. The 29-year-old actor stopped by to discuss his upcoming comedy Isn't It Romantic and also opened up about his previous roles. Naturally, he talked about one of his first major acting jobs, which was starring alongside his now-wife Miley Cyrus in 2010's The Last Song. But before he booked the gig, he was actually pining for the role of Thor, which was eventually given to his older brother Chris. That allowed Liam to focus his efforts on The Last Song. But even that didn't go very smoothly at first.

"Originally, they cast another kid," Liam revealed on the morning show. But fate had a different plan. "It didn't work out with him. My agent calls me like whispering, 'All right, you gotta go to Disney right now.
