Yet life in Newport remained relatively easy and shielded. It revolved around the surf and the sand and the sun. There were many reasons not to play high school football. Newport Harbor High School excelled in water polo, tennis, surfing and sailing - not football. That was all about to change when coaching legend Ernie Johnson came to town.
