When part-time postman Lee Frawley fancies a change in life, he takes a job as an orderly at Red Claw House, a secure hospital and psychiatric facility. Set high on a hill, it's a ramshackle old place of pills and muzak, red rooms and psychotic killers. But there's more to Red Claw House. More craziness. More darkness. More blood. Porcupines walk the wards. On the ward TV, a never ending kids show with sock-puppets of Jack the Ripper, Vlad the Impaler and Countess Bathory committing unspeakable crimes. The night watchman is convinced that only the consumption of human flesh will stop the sun from going out. Hell is a country pub with sticky carpets where Stalin and Hitler are regulars. When lights go out, limbs are removed and new ones attached, a patient is strangled with entrails and all the time, stuff just keeps vanishing: cigarettes, TV sets and people.
