Made in NY Writers Room Program Unveils Fellows, Showrunner Mentors

The WGA East and several New York City agencies have set the inaugural group of fellows for its Made in NY Writers Room initiative designed to help open doors for aspiring writers from diverse backgrounds.

After the program was unveiled last fall, the guild and the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (Mome) and other agencies were flooded with nearly 500 script submissions. All of those submissions received feedback notes from the WGA East member. Another 170 received a second round of notes. A total of 30 finalists were selected, and the 12 fellows were chosen from that pool.

The fellows comprise 11 individuals and one writing team. They will earn a $15,000 stipend for taking part in the six-month fellowship that will include mentoring sessions, networking and professional development opportunities. The program is part of a broader push by Mome to create more talent-nurturing activities to capitalize in the spike in production in the state.

Janusz Kaminski Grabs Director’s Chair for ‘The Postcard Killings’ (Exclusive)

Janusz Kaminski Grabs Director’s Chair for ‘The Postcard Killings’ (Exclusive)
Steven Spielberg’s regular cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, who has been Oscar-nominated six times and won twice, is attached to direct crime thriller “The Postcard Killings,” which Good Films will finance and produce. Sierra Affinity is handling international sales.

Liza Marklund and Tove Alsterdal penned the screenplay, based on James Patterson and Marklund’s 2010 novel. The film will shoot in New York, Munich, Stockholm, northern Sweden and possibly Norway.

The pic centers on New York detective Jacob Kanon, who joins forces with Swedish art critic Dessie Larsson to investigate a seemingly senseless sequence of killings of couples across Europe. Picture postcards are sent to apparently random journalists by the killer, each heralding the next horrific crime. Larsson has just received such a postcard, and she and Kanon must piece together the clues to catch the killer.

Kaminski, who is represented by ICM Partners, has been the cinematographer on 14 of Spielberg’s pics,

Bridge of Spies

Steven Spielberg's entertaining true life account of a chapter in the Cold War concerns a crucial negotiation by a brave attorney (Tom Hanks) who goes way out on a limb in East Berlin. Zachary Quinto to guest star on Hannibal season 3

Zachary Quinto will join Gillian Anderson in the third season of Hannibal...

Star Trek's Zachary Quinto will join Hannibal in season 3 for at least one episode. Quinto, from The Slap and American Horror Story will guest star on the NBC cut-em-up prequel series to The Silence Of The Lambs.

The actor will play a patient of Dr Bedelia Du Maurier, played by Gillian Anderson. Anderson’s role on The X-Files was loosely based on Jodie Foster’s FBI agent in the serial killer classic film. There is some speculation that Quinto may be part of a flashback to when Du Maurier killed a patient while under the influence of the good doctor with the taste for fava beans.

It was recently announced that Glenn Fleshler, who played ritual killer Errol Childress on True Detective and George Remus on Boardwalk Empire will play Mason Verger’s caretaker Cordell.

The Slap and American Horror Story star Zachary Quinto will guest star on Season 3 of NBC’s grisly good Hannibal, TVLine has confirmed.

The actor will play a patient of Gillian Anderson’s Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier for at least one episode — which has us wondering if the show might flash back to that time the enigmatic therapist took a life while under the influence of our titular sociopath.

Review: 'Girls' - 'Triggering'

Review: 'Girls' - 'Triggering'
A review of tonight's "Girls" coming up just as soon as two people ask me if I'm Blake Lively's husband... Because Lena Dunham is writer, director and star on "Girls," because she has certain traits in common with the role she plays, and because she has such a divisive public persona, almost from the start it's been impossible to separate discussion of the show from discussion of Dunham herself. People who object to "Girls" tend to object to Dunham, and vice versa. For the most part, "Girls" doesn't concern itself with the furor that wraps around the show, but every now and then, it can't help but touch on the public conflation of Hannah and Lena, and the various accusations leveled against the fictional woman and the real one(*). The most memorable of those from previous seasons was at this stage of season 2, when Donald Glover's character objected

Hannibal Recruits The Hobbit Star Richard Armitage for Killer Role

Hannibal Recruits The Hobbit Star Richard Armitage for Killer Role
Richard Armitage has found a role into which he can really sink his teeth.

The Hobbit actor will join NBC’s Hannibal in Season 3 in the terrifying role of Francis Dolarhyde (aka The Tooth Fairy). The main villian of Thomas HarrisRed Dragon, one book in the series on which Hannibal is based, the hulking Dolarhyde is a serial killer with a set of chompers that would make the Big Bad Wolf a little envious — and a penchant for targeting entire households for slaughter.

Armitage’s gig is slated to last six episodes.

Last month, the role of sociopathic Mason

‘Hannibal’ recasts Mason Verger

Michael Pitt, who played Mason Verger in NBC’s Hannibal, is leaving the show, according to TVLine. Joe Anderson (Across the Universe, The Divide) will continue the role of the sociopathic heir of a meat-packing dynasty who is full of himself for the third season.

Some Spoilers for Hannibal Season 2 follow, as well as descriptions of some of the show’s graphic content.

In the second season of Hannibal, Mason was a patient of Dr. Lecter, but turned the sessions into a power struggle over his sister Margo. Dr. Lecter later drugged Mason with psychotropic medication. Mason then broke into Will Graham’s house and carved parts of his face off and fed it to the dogs, and himself.

The change in actors will probably come off surprising well, considering the character’s lack of a face.

Michael Pitt Won’t Be Coming Back to Hannibal

Michael Pitt Won’t Be Coming Back to Hannibal
If you're an avid watcher of Bryan Fuller's Hannibal (as we are), then we have some bad news: Michael Pitt, who plays the psychopathic rich kid Mason Verger, won't be back. That doesn't mean his character is gone, though. TVLine reports that Joe Anderson (pictured here), who comes to us from TV shows like The River and The Divide, will take his place. Hannibal fans know that Mason's face is now virtually unrecognizable (I mean, remember what happened?) so it will be a matter of the kind of vocal and physical tics he brings. Either way: Bring on season three! We're starving.

Why Re-Casting Mason Verger Is No Big Deal For Hannibal

It was recently announced that Michael Pitt would not be returning for Hannibal‘s third season (set to appear on NBC in 2015) to play now-disfigured farmer Mason Verger, instead being replaced by Joe Anderson (The Divide, The River). And it appears people aren’t too happy; though he only appeared in a few episodes, Pitt’s over-the-top performance as Verger was a delicious ingredient in Hannibal‘s twisted, surrealist pie of season two. While the reasons he left are unknown (those who speculate it was his history of being difficult on set are just plain irresponsible), it’s an interesting development for the show’s third season, which is rumored to prominently feature a Verger-led manhunt for the fleeing Hannibal Lecter. However, I don’t think it’s really that big a deal Pitt was re-cast; the events of his time with Dr. Lecter have left him wildly disfigured, eliminating

Joe Anderson Replaces Michael Pitt As Hannibal’s Mason Verger

Hannibal was one of the most chilling shows on television this year, thanks in no small part to Michael Pitt’s unhinged take on billionaire sadist Mason Verger. For those hoping for a repeat performance, I’m sad to say that Pitt will not be returning to the show, and that the role has been recast. Pitt has reportedly opted out of returning for Hannibal‘s highly-anticipated third season and will be replaced by Across the Universe and The Divide actor Joe Anderson.

As disappointed as I am that Pitt won’t be back, this casting change couldn’t come at a more opportune time. When last we saw Verger, he was in particularly bad shape (feeding parts of your face to dogs will do that), so showrunner Bryan Fuller should have no problem masking the actor shuffle with a bit of makeup.

In fact, it looks like Fuller is doing just that.

Michael Pitt Not Returning for Hannibal Season 3; Will Be Replaced by Joe Anderson

A surprising casting change is underway for Hannibal Season 3. Last year’s string of episodes for the most gorgeous show on television introduced the character of Mason Verger, with Michael Pitt wonderfully inhabiting the memorable role. However, TV Line reports that Pitt has opted not to return for the show’s third season, forcing showrunner Bryan Fuller to recast the character. The switch actually comes at a fairly opportune time, as last we saw Verger his face was in a rather…disheveled condition. Joe Anderson (The Divide, The Grey) will be replacing Pitt and filling the role of Verger in the new season. More after the jump. The folks at TV Line add that Hannibal Season 3 will be introducing the recurring character of Cordell, a “quiet, very intelligent and definitely creepy” man who acts as the personal doctor to Verger, so that gives us a brief idea of where his
