Scorched Earth movie review: there’s still room for feminism at the end of the world

MaryAnn’s quick take… Gina Carano roams a mild yet tedious postapocalyptic wasteland as a bounty hunter, and either you are here for this lady badass of our feminazi dreams, or you are not. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories about women

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film

(learn more about this)

It’s a confused kind of postapocalyptic hellscape in Scorched Earth. The earth doesn’t look very scorched, for one, “fifty years after the Cloudfall.” which takes us to, apparently, the early 22nd century. The air and water are poisoned, but everything seems pretty nice otherwise up here in the mountains of what used to be Montana. There’s a sort of neo Wild West vibe: it’s a little bit Firefly, actually. Billions of people are dead, which is terrible,

Review: Scorched Earth

  • JoBlo
Plot: A bounty hunter seeks revenge against a villainous cowboy in this science fiction, western mash-up. Review: At first glance, the post-apocalyptic, low-budget action flick, Scorched Earth didn’t look like much. This kind of thing is done way too often and with mostly terrible results. For every Mad Max: Fury Road, there are a dozen or so cheapie snooze fests that are far too shoddily done to give... Read More...

Can Winchester Shoot Down Maze Runner 3 at the Box Office?

Last weekend, as expected, 20th Century Fox's Maze Runner finale The Death Cure finally took down Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle at the box office, and now it only faces minimal competition with just one movie opening in wide release this weekend, Winchester. While this Maze Runner franchise finale didn't post a massive opening, its $24.1 million was more than enough to take down both Jumanji and an expanding Hostiles, and with just one new release, debuting in far fewer theaters, we're predicting that The Maze Runner: The Death Cure, comes out on top again with $14.6 million.

If this prediction is accurate, it will represent roughly a 40% drop in its second weekend for this franchise finale, which is slightly better than the second weekend drop for 2014's The Maze Runner (46.4%) and much better than 2015's The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (56.4%). While this adaptation wasn't exactly a hit with critics,

Maze Runner 3 Dethrones Jumanji at the Box Office

Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has dominated at the box office all month long, but, as expected, its reign came to an end this weekend, thanks to 20th Century Fox's The Maze Runner: The Death Cure. While it came in slightly under projections, the third installment in The Maze Runner trilogy based on the books by author James Dashner, took in an estimated $23.5 million, more than enough to take down Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which is still putting up strong numbers in its sixth frame in theaters, dropping just 15.9% to take in $16.4 million.

The Maze Runner: The Death Cure opened in 3,787 theaters, posting a solid $6,205 per-screen average. This movie continues the downward trend for this franchise, as the trilogy comes to an end. The Maze Runner opened in 2014, debuting with a $32.5 million opening weekend, with $102.4 million domestic and $348.3 million worldwide, from just a $34 million budget. The

Can Maze Runner 3 Outrun Jumanji at the Box Office?

After posting minimal decreases, and facing minimal competition, Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has proven to be a box office hit, winning the last three weekends in a row, although that streak is likely in jeopardy with the release of 20th Century Fox's The Maze Runner: The Death Cure. This final installment of The Maze Runner trilogy, which follow the young group known as the Gladers trying to take down the organization known as Wckd, is poised to topple Jumanji, while Entertainment Studios' Hostiles will be expanding nationwide and could make a sizeable dent at the box office. We're predicting that the Gladers will finally take down the gamers of Jumanji, opening with a solid $26.1 million this weekend, which continues the slight downward decline of this franchise.

The first two Maze Runner movies weren't massive hits at the box office, but both were solid performers, putting

Trailer Watch: Gina Carano Is a Bounty Hunter in “Scorched Earth”

“Scorched Earth”

The world falls apart and Gina Carano is left picking up the pieces in a new trailer for “Scorched Earth.” The action flick is set in the aftermath of an environmental collapse that took billions of lives and nearly destroyed the planet. Humankind has since re-established a rudimentary society where bounty hunters enforce justice. Former Mma fighter Carano is one of them.

The “Deadpool” and “Haywire” actress plays Attica Gage, a woman “with a chance at the bounty of a lifetime: to bring down the ruthless outlaw, Elijah Jackson,” the film’s synopsis details. Attica could secure the biggest bounty authorities have ever offered — or lose her life trying. Her target has formed a settlement and made it a haven for lawbreakers, so it’s not just him she’s up against. But Attica doesn’t seem at all daunted. She “infiltrates Jackson’s gang, and everything is

Is “Scorched Earth” Gina Carano’s Breakthrough Movie Role?

Scorched Earth is a movie that will be coming out on February 2 of 2018. Like its name suggests, the setting is an Earth that has undergone an environmental collapse, which has caused enormous casualties. As a result, even though it has been generations and generations since that happened, human civilization remains tenuous, which is to be expected when Scorched Earth is being marketed as a post-apocalyptic movie. With that said, human civilization manages to be functional enough in the setting to support bounty hunters, which happen to include Gina Carano’s character Attica Gage. Said character is seeking to claim

Trailer For Gina Carano's Post-Apocalyptic Action Film Scorched Earth

The first trailer has been released for a new post-apocalyptic action film called Scorched Earth. The story is set in a future where the world has been destroyed by an environmental collapse. The film stars Gina Carano as a bounty hunter who is on a mission to take down a ruthless outlaw.

This looks like a made for TV movie that you would find on the SyFy Channel. There's a market for those kinds of films, but I don't think it looks that good. Maybe it will interest some of you, though. Here's the synopsis:

The planet has suffered an environmental collapse; the air became dangerous to breathe, the water became toxic, and billions of people died. Generations later, mankind has finally re-established a rudimentary society, in an attempt to pick up the pieces that continue to blister in the sun. Attica Gage (Gina Carano) is a bounty hunter with

First Trailer for Sci-Fi Action Movie 'Scorched Earth' with Gina Carano

"What makes you so different than the bounties you drag in here?" An official trailer has debuted online for a post-apocalyptic sci-fi action movie titled Scorched Earth, from actor-turned-director Peter Howitt. Set in a future where Earth has been ravaged (scorched?) and destroyed, the story follows a bounty hunter, played by Gina Carano, who gets into some major trouble when she tries to bring down a ruthless outlaw. This seems like such an odd, unoriginal mashup of bounty hunters, post-apocalyptic tropes, and maybe a bit of sci-fi, but not really. The full cast includes John Hannah, Stephanie Bennett, Alisha Newton, Ryan Robbins, Nathan Mitchell, and Patrick Gilmore. I hate to be so blunt, but this looks like a really terrible made-for-tv SyFy film. I'm really not that interested in seeing this, but check it out below anyway. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Peter Howitt's Scorched Earth, direct from
