- "The Voice" - Blind Auditions #1 - Sept. 10, 2012
"The Voice" returns for a third season.
First up an explanation of how the show works: the judges/coaches-- Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton-- listen to singers with their backs turned to the stage. They press a button to swivel their chairs forward if they want the singer on their team. If only one judge turns, that person is automatically on their team. If more than one judge swivels, the auditioner gets to pick the team they'll join. Carson Daly hosts the whole shebang. This year the teams will be bigger with 16 each and there's a twist where, when one contestant is discarded, another judge can scoop them up. Cee Lo also has a cockatoo now instead of a cat.
Performance: The judges sing "Start Me Up" by the Rolling Stones. There is confetti and moving scaffolding and Christina Aguilera in an unfortunate bustier/leotard with fishnets.
First up is Terry McDermott who is from a small town in Scotland. He's 36 and has been here for about 10 years trying to make it with a band. Carson shows him a quick surprise video clip from his family back home. He has a cute little boy. He sings "Baba O'Riley" by the Who. He's got a solid, smooth, rock voice with good power and range. He's strong, and at the end Cee Lo, Adam, and Blake all turn.He picks Blake. Next up is De'borah who is from Chicago and is the daughter of pastors. She used to be very girlie and now she's more quirky in her appearance-- she looks and dresses a little like Urkel. She says she's into love, she's not into the gender thing and she says it's complicated. Then she says she's gay. Her parents are very supportive. She say she represents misfits. She sings "Hey, Soul Sister" by Train and she has very sweet stage presence and a raspy, soul pop voice. Christina and Cee Lo turn around. Turns out that both of Cee Lo's parents were ministers too. She picks Christina because she was inspired by Christina's song "The Voice Within." Next is Gracia Harrison who is an 18-year-old country singer from Illinois who also yodels. She sings "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart." Adam and Blake turn in quick succession right near the top. Cee Lo turns just as she starts to yodel. She's got a good straight up twang. She picks Blake, Adam is devastated and throws a mock tantrum.
Next up is Garrett Gardner a 16-year-old soul singer from New Jersey. His dad was a jazz musician, he died of cancer two years ago. He wants to carry out his legacy. He sings "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" by Credence Clearwater Revival. He's got a gruff, Ray LaMontagne-y kind of voice. No one turns around. They give him constructive criticism about control of his voice and Christina tells him he's 80 percent there. She hugs him and Adam tells him he's so much better than he was at 16.
Next up is Devyn Deloera a 20-year-old from Texas. She describes herself as an oddball as a child and she was home-schooled. She sings "Ain't No Other Man" by Christina Aguilera. She knows this could be "suicidal." She sounds pretty good. She's no Christina but she can sing, there are weak bits from a breath control standpoint but then she soars. Christina turns. Adam and Blake follow. She picks, unsurprisingly, Christina.
Next up is Bryan Keith a 22-year-old from the Bronx. His dad is a Grammy-winning Latin jazz musician who is very supportive. He sings "It Will Rain" by Bruno Mars. Blake turns immediately.Christina follows quickly, then Cee Lo and finally Adam. He's got a decent pop-soul voice with a little pleading rasp. He picks Adam.
Next up is Daniel Rosa who auditioned last season but no one turned around for him and everyone told him to work on his pitch. He thought he was just missing confidence so he's back and he says that one appearance got him gigs and fans. This time he sings "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye. He mixes up the arrangement a bit and slows it down. He's got a groovy, raspy soulful kind of voice. Cee Lo and Blake turn and scream with happy surprise. It's very touching. Adam runs onstage and gives him a big hug. He needs to sit down he's so overwhelmed. He picks Cee Lo.
Next up is Anita Antoinette who is a Jamaica native but lives in Boston and just graduated from Berklee College of Music. She's 22 and singing a Bob Marley song in honor of her mom. She sings "No Woman, No Cry." She's got a deep, rich alto. Adam flirts with pushing his button but no one turns. He says to Cee Lo "you can't sing this song you've got to bring this song." She asks to sing the song again a cappella even though she won't be on a team. They let her.
Next up is Joe Kirkland a 24-year-old rocker from Fort Worth, Texas who was in a band that fell apart. He sings "Gives You Hell." Adam turns first and Blake moments later. He's got a very right now, pop radio voice, a little nasally, pop punk vibe with a dash of falsetto and grit on either end. He picks Adam.
Next up is Jessica Sharpe from North Carolina. She's a country girl who has never been out of NC even though she's 23. She's a hairdresser. She's only been singing for a couple of years with a cover band. She sings "Son of a Preacher Man," by Dusty Springfield. She's got a husky alto. She sounds like a solid cover band singer. She's very sad no one turned. They try to assuage her pain. Blake tells her try again and then they'll make history. Christina gives her a hug and tells her not to cry.
We get a montage of people who also didn't get anyone to turn.
The final auditioner is Trevin Hunte from Queens. He's 18 and his dad is a garbage truck driver and is very proud. He sings "Listen" by Beyonce from "Dreamgirls." He starts off tenderly and a little shaky and Christina turns immediately. He gets stronger and more powerful and showy in that gospel/singing competition way that is a bit strident and occasionally off pitch but very strong. Blake turns, followed by Cee Lo. Only Adam holds out. He claims he's scared of the other three but I think it's a pitch issue for him. He picks Cee Lo.
