Woody Harrelson and Brie Larson in The Glass Castle (2017)
Jeannette Walls reflects on the unconventional upbringing she and her siblings had at the hands of their dysfunctional parents, alcoholic Rex and artist Rose Mary. The poverty-stricken family was constantly on the move as Rex was unable to keep a stable job. After running away from home, Walls became a successful New York-based journalist.

Jeannette Walls: "Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts as Rex and Rose Mary profoundly understood the couple’s love-hate relationship. When they weren’t trying to kill each other, they were incredibly tender."
Jeannette Walls: "Talking to Josh Caras was a little weird because his eyes reminded me so much of Brian’s. So did his gestures and his laugh. Shree Crooks also seems so much like my kid sister that it was dazzling."
Jeannette Walls: "The cast spent a lot of time together and bonded like a family. The complex and nuanced emotions captured by Ella Anderson in some of those tough scenes blew me away. Sadie Sink also really got adolescent Lori’s sarcasm. I give a lot of credit for the amazing performances to Naomi Watts, who treated the young cast members like they were her own children."
Jeannette Walls: "The amazing production designer Sharon Seymour went to great lengths to create 93 Little Hobart Street and when I first went in, I gasped."
Jeannette Walls: “I don’t know how Woody Harrelson captured it, but Dad used to stand like that all the time. All of these characters are spot on. That looks so much like the way Mom would look and Sadie Sink completely nailed Lori at that age.”
Jeannette Walls: "Max did such a phenomenal job of making a character that could have been unsympathetic genuinely likable. His performance was so perfect. As for Brie Larson, she makes a better Jeannette Walls than I do."
Jeannette Walls: "I love the feeling of hope and despair when the Walls Family sees their new house."

    • Trivia
Jennifer Lawrence was attached to star and produce the movie for a long period of time but dropped out. Brie Larson was cast in the lead role after Lawrence dropped out.
    • Goofs
When Rex and Jeannette are looking at the stars in the middle of the night, she chooses one and he says it is Venus. Not possible because Venus is only seen in the early morning in the east, or early evening in the west. However this works well with Rex's character and perhaps not a goof but intended. Rex made up stuff all the time.
    • Quotes

Rex: [Rex exposes Jeanette's burned stomach] There, how's that feel?

Young Jeannette: It's so ugly, Dad, I look like a demon.

Rex: There's nothing ugly about you. You hear me? One day I promise you you're gonna look at this as just another side of how strong you are. You're a Walls, Mountain Goat. And we ain't like other people. We got a fire burning in our bellies. And that there is goddamn proof of it. Now... this knife is especially designed to hunt demons. It's very sharp. Don't take it out unless you see him. You can borrow it for the night. You know, all monsters are the same. They like to frighten people, but the minute you stare them down, they turn tail and run. I love you, Mountain Goat.

    Growing up - difficult
Raising children is not easy. Being a child growing up in an unstable relationship and general instability character wise (parents wise that is), is not easy either. This movie is not easy to watch is what I'm trying to say. But it is rewarding if you are into dramas and really good performances. The lines are blurred between good and bad, and what parenting is about and how or what you should learn from the usually most important people in your life.

Woody Harrelson gives a powerhouse performance, which elevates but is also enhanched through the other great performances. As the saying goes, what doesn't kill you ... So if you like slow moving drama with a distraught time line, this is the one you may like
