Goofs

The timeline of the show often changes; the first season indicates being set in 2010 (upon entering prison, Piper begs Larry to not watch the latest Mad Men without her, and Larry is shown the latest episode from season 4, which originally aired in 2010). However, season 5 references the San Bernarndino shootings, which occurred in 2015. This cannot be possible as Piper's prison sentence was for 15 months and only about a year has passed in those five seasons. See more »

Started out good, then got too preachy
10 October 2013 | by branh0913See all my reviews

Having enjoyed House Of Cards so much, I was delighted to find out that there was another Netflix exclusive series. However there were some red flags, the primary one being that the person who made Weeds possible was behind this. Don't get me wrong, I liked Weeds but after Season 3, Nancy became narcissist, annoying, selfish, etc. A very unlikeable main character, which made me detest the show where I had to stop watching.

With that said, my issues with this show isn't the same issues I have with Weeds. However for the most part, I don't really like the main character, I find her very hard to relate to, and really hard to like. I do like many of the supporting characters, and I like the fact that this series is very character driven. I'm not a big fan of how Hollywood handles homosexuality and LGBT in general. I feel they often try to shove it down your throat. Part of what kept me watching was the fact that this show kind of just has it there, doesn't shove it down your throat, and even show how some of these sexual preference can be selfish.

I actually really liked the way they dealt with LGBT themes, I found it refreshing. I also liked the fact that they weren't afraid to dive into stereotypes or make caricatures out of some of the ethnic groups. The show's strong character development gives many of these characters dimensions, and it comes across as believable. On top of that, I also like the fact that the women in this show look like women who could be in prison, they're very realistic, and don't have a lot of Hollywood gloss to them. It makes the show fairly realistic in that regard.

I think this show takes a dive with Pensatucky character. And in the very end it serves as a platform for anti-Christanity. I found it VERY disappointing, especially after giving a very balanced view of LGBT and race.

I also liked that there are flashbacks to many of the female characters to show how they ended up in prison. It's really cool, but I would have loved to see them round it out. I think in many episodes where they flashback to Piper and Alex are kind of cop outs really. Again, I found Piper to be the least interesting character. Some characters who seemed interesting only really discuss the events that lead them to prison.

Again, I think the weakest part of his series is Piper. Even her fiancée is far more interesting. I do like the fact that Piper and the writers acknowledge that she may be narcissistic and selfish. However I really disliked Pensatucky, and her stereotypical they made Christans look. Especially considering they made her an extreme fundamentalist, and did very little to give a balanced view of religion. She seemed tacked on in an eager attempt for the writers to discuss an anti-Christian agenda. Their balancing was via the nun character, but I thought the nun characters was very uninteresting. And she seemed like she was "just there".

Season 1 ends in a cliff hanger, but you kind of see it coming. There is clearly plans for a Season 2 with a lot of sub plots up in the air with no resolution. However I do expect Season 2 to be far far weaker.

This show is decent, and engaging, but a lot of the homosexuality, some of the stereotypes, and some of the anti-Christianity will turn some off. With stereotypes and LGBT they did at least give some balance there.

I'd recommend it if you liked Weeds.
