- John and Zoe go deep undercover as husband and wife to get close to a person who's been using a dead guy's identity for the past 15 years. In a flashback Finch first meets Grace Hendricks.
- Reese is out of his element with their next number belonging to Graham Wyler, a seemingly straight laced family man who lives and owns his own small hardware store in suburban Far Rockaway, New York. Reese learns that surveillance in the residential suburbs is much different than it is in the city. That's why Finch sets up a cover for him as a suburban family man who moves in across the street from the Wylers. It is up to Reese to find his own "wife", who he chooses being an old friend who owes Reese, but to who the suburbs are equally as foreign. As they dig a little deeper, they learn that Graham Wyler is an assumed identity - one taken from a dead man - that Wyler's wife Connie and their teenaged daughter Izzy are probably unaware. As they discover who Graham Wyler really is, they believe his past will come back to haunt him, with Graham having the options of taking the right path to a somewhat happy ending with his family, or the wrong path into a violent life of crime. Meanwhile, through flashbacks, how Finch met who is probably the most important person in his adult personal life is shown.—Huggo
- The Machine delivers the number of Graham Wyler, a family man married with Connie and with a teenage daughter, Izzy, who owns a hardware store and lives in the suburban Far Rockway. Reese finds strange that such an ordinary man is in risk, but Finch rents the house in front of Wyler's to Reese. He invites Zoe Morgan to pose as his wife to become closer to the Wyler's family. Finch learns that Graham Wyler died fifteen years ago, and he is actually the small thief Lloyd Pruitt, who was specialized in safes and used the identity of the deceased man to have a clean start. However, the criminals from his gang in the past have found him and a haunting him. Meanwhile, Finch recalls his romantic interest in Grace Hendricks, and his initial dates with her.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Flashback to 2004: Finch talks with Nathan Ingram (Brett Cullen) about how the machine works, particularly in terms of identifying outlier personalities in people. He says it's learning about human nature. One reason is because the machine shows them Grace Hendricks (Carrie Preston), an artist who is painting near the water. Finch thinks it must be a bug.
In present day, the next name the machine spits out is Graham Wyler (David Denman), who appears to be a boring family man and business owner. Reese visits his hardware store and sees what appears to be Wyler receiving shady goods of some kind. But later Reese sees that they were just concert tickets for his wife's Connie's birthday. Finch has uncovered a death certificate of a man named Graham Wyler who died 15 years earlier.
Finch has Reese move in to a house for sale next to the Wylers. Zoe Morgan (Paige Turco) is going to pose as his wife for the cover story.
Reese and Wyler talk at a neighborly barbecue, with Reese pretending to sell security. Zoe strikes up a friendship with Connie (Alicia Witt). Wyler's daughter Izzie (Olivia Nikkanen) brings her father a postcard from Philadelphia that seems to concern him. He leaves and Reese switches beers with Wyler to obtain Wyler's fingerprints. That night Reese sends a partial print to Carter.
The next day Wyler bumps into a man, Chris Vaughn, (Dominic Fumusa) who calls him Lloyd. He gets into a car with a Daniel Burnside (Victor Verhaeghe). Carter calls with word that Wyler is really Lloyd Pruit, a small-time career criminal in Virginia with only one prior. He had been involved with B&E, running with two other guys who got pinched and did 12 years in prison. One of the men shot an unarmed guard during a jewelry store heist.
After Izzie's soccer match, the Wylers' SUV catches fire. Vaughn calls Wyler and tells him they have some catching up to do.
Reese finally gets Wyler to agree to let him put in a security system. Finch helps put it in, meaning he will have full access to the family. Finch has learned Wyler was the safe-cracker for his crew. He didn't show up for the last heist, during which Vaughn shot the security guard.
Wyler is starting to crack and Connie notices. Reese cooks up a story so he can give Wyler a ride into the city.
Finch and Zoe see Connie is having a rough time, so Zoe brings her some food. Connie tells her they met at a concert when Wyler saved her from a creep who was hitting on her.
Flashback to 2005, with Finch testing the machine and its ability to connect random people. He spots Hendricks again. The machine has noticed she is different because she is so normal and decent.
Reese drops Wyler off and jumps into a car with Carter. They listen to Wyler's old partners tell him they think he owes him for the time they had to do in jail. They want him to help them crack a safe for one huge job that will let them leave the country. If he doesn't help them, they'll hurt his family.
Reese wants to jump in, but Carter says what they have won't be enough to hold them. She wants to catch the guys in the act, so Reese hides a burner phone on their truck.
The night of the heist Wyler leaves a note for his wife and takes off. Reese thinks Wyler's old partners will kill him after he cracks the safe for them.
Finch finds the likely location of the safe Wyler will be cracking. It's a luxury high-rise apartment owned by a man named Cleric.
In the elevator we see that Wyler is working with four other guys, all of whom are heavily armed and wearing masks. They tell him Cleric is a gem dealer and his son likes to have parties when Cleric is out of town. They have not provided a gun or mask for Wyler. They burst into the party and grab everybody's wallet and phone. They hand Wyler a stethoscope and tell him to crack the safe.
Finch is trying to get into the high-rise's security system. Zoe and Reese enter the building under a cover and visit somebody she knows there. Finch gets into the system and gives Reese a sense of what to expect. With Wyler still working on the safe, Reese takes out one of the guys and puts on his mask.
Cleric's son triggers a panic button, which puts out a robbery call that Finch cannot stop. Wyler is ordered at gunpoint to keep working on the safe. Finch asks Carter to delay the police response. Wyler gets into the safe and grabs a bag with $20 million in diamonds. At this point Finch triggers the sound system which gives Reese a chance to take out a few more guys. Wyler almost shoots one of his old partners, but Reese takes off his mask and assures him that would be a terrible idea. Carter takes the cops up the apartment a circuitous way, allowing Reese and Wyler the opportunity to get out. Outside Wyler tells Reese about leaving the note. He doesn't think he can go back to his family this way and turns himself in.
Wyler agrees to testify against the other members of the robbery crew for a reduced sentence. It seems like Connie will be staying with him.
Back in 2006 Finch finally introduces himself to Hendricks.
