Not Your Average Bigfoot Film
3 January 2013 | by See all my reviews

It seems the study of cryptozoology has become more and more mainstream. Once viewed by many as nothing more than fun stories that no one could honestly take seriously, the search for and study of cryptids is now a mainstay on various cable networks. It seems that more and more Americans are taking an interest in Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and a host of other unseen and undocumented animals. Those skeptical of viewing another "Bigfoot documentary" depicting outdoors-men wandering throughout the woods hollering into the night while wearing night vision goggles only be shocked when nothing is discovered will be disappointed. The cultural impact of this field is what director Christopher Maloney seeks to discover. Why do people devote their time, energy, and resources to searching for cryptids? How has the experience of being an eyewitness to such a creature impacted these people? Why are some individuals so excited to share what they've seen and others wary of telling their story to anyone? These are the sort of questions Maloney attempts to answer as he travels from coast to coast interviewing numerous eyewitnesses on his "cryptotrip." While certainly a low budget film, the narrative is solid and keeps the audiences' attention. Skeptics and true believers will walk away from the short documentary having gained a new understanding and appreciation of cryptozoology.
