Norwegian screenwriter, producer, cinematographer and director Erik Poppe's fourth feature film which was written by Norwegian author, musician and screenwriter Harald Rosenløw Eeg after a story by him and Erik Poppe, is inspired by personal experiences and is the director's first English-language film. It premiered in the World Competition section at the 37th Montréal World Film Festival in 2013, was shot on locations in Morocco, Ireland, Kenya and Afghanistan and is a Norway- Sweden-Ireland co-production which was produced by Norwegian producers Finn Gjerdrum and Stein B. Kvae. It tells the story about a prominent war photographer named Rebecca Thomas who lives in Ireland with her husband named Marcus who is a marine biologist and their two daughters named Steph and Lisa. After working in Kabul, Afghanistan with a female suicide bomber, Rebecca returns home with damages. All though Rebecca is still urgent about returning, she decides to leave her job after listening to her family.
Distinctly and intimately directed by Nordic filmmaker Erik Poppe, this quietly paced and somewhat fictional tale which is narrated from multiple viewpoints though mostly from the main character's point of view, draws a reflective and graceful portrayal of a mother and wife's relationship with her husband, her daughters and her commitment to her important work. While notable for its variegated and atmospheric milieu depictions, reverent cinematography by Norwegian cinematographer John Christian Rosenlund, production design by production designer Eleanor Wood and use of sound, colors and light, this dialog-driven and narrative-driven story about having to sacrifice time with one's family for a greater good and combining family life with a demanding occupation where an Irish student's school project about Africa leads her to a better understanding of who her mother is and why her work means so much not only to her, depicts a considerate study of character and contains a lyrical and timely score by French composer Armand Amar.
This somewhat autobiographical, conversational, educational and compassionately atmospheric drama which is set mostly in Ireland and where the transition into leading a quieter life, being a mother to her children and a wife to her spouse after risking everything to document the conditions of men, women and children marred by war and terrorism, becomes an internal conflict between two equally poignant obligations where a photo journalist has to choose to dedicate her time and effort to one or the other, is impelled and reinforced by its cogent narrative structure, subtle character development and continuity, contrasting scenes and photographs of two very different worlds and the commendable acting performances by French actress Juliette Binoche, Danish actor Nikolaj Coaster-Waldau and Irish actress Lauryn Canny. A cinematographic, heart-shaped and gripping narrative feature which gained, among other awards, the Special Grand Prize of the jury at the 37th Montréal Film Festival in 2013.
