Richard Castle: [chuckles] That was awesome! Beckett never drives on the sidewalk.
Detective Ethan Slaughter: You're gonna hang with me, we're gonna lay out some ground rules. Rule number one, do not use the word 'awesome'. You're a grown man. Rule number two, stay out of my way.
Richard Castle: Is that it?
Detective Ethan Slaughter: It's kind of all-encompassing.
[as they are about to enter a bar looking for a suspect]
Detective Ethan Slaughter: Are you packin'?
Richard Castle: Packing? No, I'm not a cop. My vest says 'Writer' on it
Detective Ethan Slaughter: Rule number 3, You ride with me,
[hands Castle his ankle gun]
Detective Ethan Slaughter: you ride strapped. Come on.
Richard Castle: Hey, hey, what about regulations?
Detective Ethan Slaughter: You signed a waiver, didn't ya? Okay, you take the front, I'll go in the back.
Richard Castle: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Shouldn't we call for backup?
Detective Ethan Slaughter: You got a *skirt* says 'Writer' on it, too?
Richard Castle: This is the hardest part of the job, breaking the news to the family. So, what's your style? Terse yet compassionate? Sensitive but strong?
Detective Ethan Slaughter: Brian! Glitch is in the morgue. Someone pumped 3 rounds into him.
Dr. Carter Burke: You're upset.
Kate Beckett: No... Yes, okay? Fine. Yes, I thought that the two of us were actually getting closer together. And now it seems like he's just pulling away.
Dr. Carter Burke: Have you asked him why?
Kate Beckett: Yes. And he said, "Oh, everything is fine."
Dr. Carter Burke: What makes you think it isn't?
Kate Beckett: Because he's acting like a complete *jackass*! He shows up at the precinct with these bimbos hanging on his arm and now he's running around with another cop.
Dr. Carter Burke: Is this other cop a woman?
Kate Beckett: No! No. Why... why would you even ask that? That's not even the point. The point is I don't understand why he's acting like this. I mean, what did I do? No. No!. Why... Why would you even ask that? That's not even the point. The point is, I don't understand why he's acting like this. I mean, what did I do?
Dr. Carter Burke: Well, maybe, from his point of view, the question is, what *didn't* you do?
Kate Beckett: Wait, what? Wh-What do you mean?
Dr. Carter Burke: When you were shot, Castle said that he loved you. How long ago was that?
Kate Beckett: Seven months ago, but I wasn't ready to hear that then.
Dr. Carter Burke: What do you think he's telling you with his behavior.
Kate Beckett: [pause than slowly] That maybe he's not there... anymore? That maybe he's not ready?
[she sits down and sighs heavily]
Kate Beckett: What if I waited too long?
Dr. Carter Burke: You weren't waiting, Kate. You were healing.
Kate Beckett: Yeah, but then in the meantime, he's moved on.
Dr. Carter Burke: Or he's protecting himself by not taking more emotional risks.
Kate Beckett: So then what do I do?
Dr. Carter Burke: What do you want to do?
Richard Castle: Hey. Thanks very much for your help.
Kate Beckett: No problem, Castle. It's what partners are supposed to do.
Richard Castle: [Playing with a Godzilla and a Barbie. As Godzilla] You are very, uh, beautiful, Nikki Heat. It is, uh, too bad that I have to kill you now.
[as Nikki Heat]
Richard Castle: Uglier men than you have tried, Trago.
[the Barbie doll slaps Godzilla. As Godzilla]
Richard Castle: You have slapped me. I will not let...
Martha Rodgers: Playing with dolls, are we?
Richard Castle: These are action figures.
Detective Ethan Slaughter: [denying Castle's request for a ride-along] I need a writer hanging around like I need a case of the crabs.
[in a deep sleep, Castle is jerked awake by Alexis' shrieks of joy]
Richard Castle: What happened?
Alexis Castle: Dad, I got in, I-I got in!
Richard Castle: Oh. Where?
Martha Rodgers: Almost everywhere so far.
Alexis Castle: Oxford, Princeton, Sarah Lawrence.
Alexis Castle: That's great, honey. I-I knew it would work out.
Alexis Castle: Really?
Richard Castle: Yeah.
Alexis Castle: Then why were you hiding the letters from me?
Richard Castle: What?
Alexis Castle: Come on, Dad. I can read a postmark. Some of these came last week.
[she thumps him on the head with the letters]
Richard Castle: Oh! I just, I'm sorry. Honey, I-I'm just trying to protect you.
Alexis Castle: I'm eighteen now. You need to trust that I can take care of my...
[trailing off as she reads one of her acceptance letters]
Alexis Castle: ...myself.
Richard Castle: What?
Alexis Castle: I got into Stanford.
Martha Rodgers: Yes! Oh, great! That's always been your first choice, right?
Richard Castle: And yet I sense trouble.
Alexis Castle: I-I don't know. I should be happy. But after they shot me down for early admission...
Richard Castle: They rejected you. And you feel betrayed.
Alexis Castle: How am I supposed to get over that?
Detective Ethan Slaughter: I tell you what I'd do. I'd go all caveman on that partner of yours. Show her what time it is in Real Man Land.
Richard Castle: Real Man Land?
Detective Ethan Slaughter: Mm-hmm.
Richard Castle: Oh, is that what you were showing Laura when we were back at the morgue?
Detective Ethan Slaughter: I just throw a little attention her way, make her happy. You know, I'm macking on this hot new redhead who just started working there. That girl's barely street legal.
Richard Castle: Redhead?
Detective Ethan Slaughter: Yeah.
Richard Castle: About 5'5", blue eyes? Intern?
Detective Ethan Slaughter: Yeah. You know her?
Richard Castle: That's my daughter.
Detective Ethan Slaughter: Seriously? That girl got an ass.
[Castle slugs Slaughter]
Kate Beckett: You feel cocky. I get it. You just dodged a murder rap. Probably gonna go out tonight and celebrate with your boys. And you should. Paint the town. But then, in the morning, I want you to get the hell out of my city.
Cesar Vales: But I like it here.
Kate Beckett: You might like it right now. But starting tomorrow, you're gonna see just how hard a city New York can be, when the full force of the NYPD comes crashing down on you with 30,000 cops making it their daily duty to make your life a living hell.
[after watching Beckett intimidate a suspect]
Detective Ethan Slaughter: That is sexy.
[seeing Castle's expression]
Detective Ethan Slaughter: What? You wanna hit me for that, too?
Richard Castle: No.
[Slaughter sucker punches Castle in the gut]
Detective Ethan Slaughter: That's for not having my back. Oh, and if I ever see a character in one of your novels like me, we're gonna have words. So I'm gonna see you at the hearing on Tuesday, right?
Richard Castle: [hoarsely] You got it.
Detective Ethan Slaughter: Outstanding.
[passing Beckett as he leaves]
Detective Ethan Slaughter: Detective, you ever wanna go on a date that ends in hot sex after a drunken fist fight, you know where to find me.
Kate Beckett: Yeah. In "never gonna happen" land.
Richard Castle: You're not going to mangle anyone today, are you?
Detective Ethan Slaughter: I like to keep my options open.
