Storyline

The adventures of a Ragnar Lothbrok: the greatest hero of his age. The series tells the saga of Ragnar's band of Viking brothers and his family as he rises to become King of the Viking tribes. Trivia

The women in the opening credits are supposed to be the 9 daughters of Rán, the personifications of the waves. The title sequence is supposed to show the separation of a viking from the living, with the ornaments of his life (gold and weapons) floating down around him. During the shot of the rolling thunder there is a single frame showing Hel Lokisdottir: the goddess of death. See more »

Goofs

The whole time line is quite mixed up for the series. At the time of Lindisfarne (S01), Ragnar wasn't even born. King Ecbert died about 6 years before Ragnar, in 839. Aethelwulf would have been king at that time. Aethelwulf himself died in 858, 7 years before the invasion of the Great Heathen Army. In the series, the invasion seems to follow Ragnar's death almost immediately, while in reality there was a 20 year gap between both (his sons - with the exception of Bjorn - being young children when he died). Season 4 also shows the winter at Repton as if it were immediately after landing in England, while in reality it was 8 or 9 years after the invasion. Ecbert (who is shown as king of Wessex) and his son Aethelwulf were long dead. Also the successive kings Aethelbald, Aethelberht and Aethelred (sons of Aethelwulf) were dead. King at the time of Repton would have been Alfred, Athelwulf's youngest son, about 24 years old. Not a child as shown in the series. See more »

First four seasons are 9/10 and last two are 2/10
11 December 2019 | by poetictankSee all my reviews

The show completely dies in season four. SO MUCH WASTED POTENTIAL in the final seasons with Ragnar's sons, more specifically, Ivar. In history, he was the last true Viking to battle the heathens and try to take over their colonies. It started off so promising, too. Bjorn becomes only good for trying to bed every semi-attractive woman who carries a sword. It turns into stupid drama and begins to more so ressemble a cable TV soap opera.

I'm finishing it because there's only season 6 left anyways. It was a great show for its majority, and I hope that season 6 can redeem itself.

Poor casting and not enough direction from the writers in the later seasons is what ruins it.
