A decent episode with a harsh third act
markcambrone10 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Our young friends, the Cutie Mark Crusaders, decide to take on journalism to see if they earn their cutie marks. Because of the bossy Diamond Tiara, the three are forced to get stories of very humiliating secrets and mishaps involving their schoolmates, until, because older ponies start reading up on their tales, they decide to start writing about everyone under the name of Gabby Gums. At first it seems to entertain, until their stories start showing deep personal secrets that start to humiliate their readers. After their identities are revealed, the town immediately start ignoring them or telling them to leave them alone. With no other alternative, the three send a public apology to every pony in Ponyville as the episode's friendship report, which allows the town to forgive them and have Diamond Tiara lose her place as the editor of their newspaper.

Okay, what exactly is wrong with this episode? Well, the problems I have are in the third act. First off, every pony knows who they are so why bother even use "Gabby Gums" and how did they know? Second, it has a bit to do with the last part, but I think it has to do with me thinking this episode reeks with "hypocrisy". For starters, for the town to have known who Gabby Gums is, Rarity, having learned herself, would have told every pony despite herself learning how gossip can be painful. Not to mention how she herself told Sweetie Belle why gossip can hurt given how they compare looking through Rarity's journal with looking through Sweetie Belle's back pack. Also I think every pony was being a hypocrite, isolating themselves from the three despite that they themselves read the paper and made them write even more. In fact, that's my third problem, all of the pony's distancing themselves from the CMC. I can see Angel given he's a jerk to everyone but Fluttershy (most of the time) and maybe Rainbow Dash given she can be a bit of a jerk, albeit making it rain on them was too much. Spike and Twilight I thought were a bit too much given they're usually the ones aiding others and I figured they'd convince the three to give up the gossip column. However, the big one for me is Big Mac and Applejack. You can argue complete strangers and people they're not related to acting this way. But family? ESPECIALLY Apple Bloom's family? I'm sorry, that's harsh for them to learn a lesson. Maybe you can argue all of Ponyville was doing it on purpose to teach the three a lesson and make them apologize, but I'd have sooner expected the three to run away then them making an apology to all of Ponyville.

So, take it for what its worth. Not a bad episode, but not one I'll watch again.

Pony gossip
TheLittleSongbird18 May 2020
One of the main reasons for seeing "Ponyville Confidential" in the first place, as we near the end of a quite well done and interesting if inconsistent second season, is for the concept/story. It is such a relatable one, likewise with the moralising, and very relevant in today's society, with there being daily gossip daily in pretty much every newspaper and magazine there is (most of which without proof and bordering on the wrong side of cheap and nasty).

"Ponyville Confidential" is a very solid episode with a lot of very good to great things. It does a great job with this topical subject, doing it in an entertaining and worth relating to way, and it really has been great that in Season 2 there has been a real and mostly successful effort in making the Cutie Mark Crusaders more distinct and more developed (with this episode being far from an exception). Even if it doesn't do anything to change my mind on my dislike of one character that plays a role big enough in the episode to stop it from being great.

Again, Diamond Tiara (have really not cared for her this season) is truly obnoxious and too much of a bully. Although she is meant to be this bossy sort of character this was taken to extremes, which has been the case in some of Season 2's episodes (and the other seasons are no exceptions either) in that negative personality traits have been overdone.

Wouldn't have said no to her being exposed earlier, or at least the Cutie Mark Crusaders some way to avoid the consequences of their actions to get to the extent they did. Despite their actions being uncondonable, their treatment was far too harsh.

There are so many great things though about "Ponyville Confidential". The animation is vibrant and the attention to detail always catches the eye positively. The music is suitably dynamic. It was impossible to not appreciate the episode's remarkable ability to make each Cutie Mark Crusader character well defined and not the one-dimensional, too cute characters they could have been. Loved the character interaction, not just between the Cutie Mark Crusaders but in particular between Applejack and Big Mac which made for poignant stuff.

Similarly loved Big Mac's way of telling off, very firm without being intimidating. One of the episode's most relatable aspects was Rarity's emotional state throughout, her fury is wonderfully theatrical but quite affecting too. 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' is always great in character writing and interactions, and this is for example apparent in the spa scene. The story is always compelling, entertains throughout and so relevant still in today's journalism, also relevant is the tactfully handled and very important moral. It never preaches but makes its point. The writing is thoughtful and witty.

All in all, very good on the whole. 8/10

Diamond Tiara at her WORST
TheIrishJackomon28 November 2021
This episode just feels really harsh on the Cutie Mark Crusaders, and I feel like all of the characters were real OOC (minus Rainbow Dash) in this episode. Like, they get mad at the CMC for writing gossip in the paper, but they don't even think about "oh, we should charge the newspaper head", hell, Cheerilee doesn't even do anything until the end of the episode where she fires Diamond Tiara. I did say in the title that Diamond Tiara was at her WORST, and the reason is due to the characters being OOC. Like, not even Applejack or Rarity even do investigation, they've known Apple Bloom & Sweetie Belle for their whole lives, wouldn't they bit at least a bit suspicious and do some investigating. This is the WORST episode of Friendship is Magic for me.
