Mazing Tanker
hellraiser71 March 2023
This game is another entry in the under the radar series and is also another of my favorite tank shooters of all time.

It's a simple concept and that's what makes it work showing how once again less can be more. It's like the tank fighting sequence in the Atari 2600 game "Combat" only here they tread inches further.

The graphical presentation is good for what it is, simplistic but that's all you need. I like the design of the tanks, each of them is unique and each vary in strength. And yeah, there isn't any music, most retro games back then didn't have it, so if you want music, you can always stick in your earbuds and listen to a downloaded song on your phone. But the sound is really good, really like the sound of the explosion but even when you tank explodes there is this cool guitar beat. Even when the game is over the few stums you hear sound cool. And the control is solid and spot on.

One of the things that make the game are for one thing, you have different combat maze courses and challenges. Each one is always different along with a varied amount and types of enemy tank to dispose of. This gives you a limited amount of time to adapt and plan out your attack pattern.

The objective in each of the rounds is simple which is to destroy every tank in the area and just move on from there. But of course it's not as easy as that as I said before there are the odds but also each tank model is different. Like some tanks take more hits than others, or some generate force fields that take more hits to disable, and other tanks have stronger weapons whom are the ones that are the most dangerous. So you have to pick out your shots and order in destroying the tanks carefully.

Another thing that makes the game unique is there is an element of strategy, from figuring out quickly how to take on the whole group and who to take out first. But also how to use the environment to your advantage as each of the environments can provide cover or even can get the enemy tank in your sights and right where you want them. Your tank has two things, there is a shield function which will help shield you from enemy fire but not all, so you still need to be careful. The other your armed with a laser which has a full amount of range, this can be useful in welding the odds down a little faster which means there are faster ways to win. And your will need to win with enough time to spare as you have a fuel/power gauge that runs down depending on how long you play, so don't waste time just do what you came to do now and fast.

There are a couple of other things like whenever you destroy tanks there is a wreckage pile left, and this can work to your advantage, because when enemy tanks roll over it, it slows them down giving you a chance of attack. However this trap also slows you down to, so try to avoid rolling over the piles.

Another is whenever you destroy takes they make this big explosion much like the effect you'd see from the arcade classic "Missile Command". And the thing is that if any enemy takes are near the explosion it can destroy them or even weaken there strength meter. This was cool because it meant you could create some chain combinations which wasn't a common concept at the time. However, you can also get destroyed in the explosion so make sure are far enough away.

This vintage classic has enough tread for fun.

Rating: 3 and a half stars.
