Storyline

Sunday evening, May 1, 2011. The ACN news team is at Will's for a party to mark a year of good reporting. Charlie gets a call alerting him to a major news announcement at 10. By 9:00, everyone's on their way to the studio (with Will under the influence of a Vicodin and two pot-laced cookies). Don, Sloan, and Elliot are stuck on the tarmac at LaGuardia waiting for a gate. As the team uses brains and sources to narrow the possibilities - and get confirmation of what's going on - Charlie has to make the call as to when they go on the air: get it right without collateral damage. By evening's end, he gets a second tip suggesting that another story is brewing. Written by <jhailey@hotmail.com>

Goofs

Don, Elliot and Sloan are sitting in economy class seating flying between Washington DC and New York's LaGuardia Airport. There would be at least a bulkhead and three rows of first class seating between them, the flight attendant position and the cockpit, making the physical confrontation shown between Don and the flight crew impossible. Problems in the newsroom
7 July 2017 | by Mr-FusionSee all my reviews

Following a good run, there's something very off about '5/1'. More like a few things, and it really doesn't come off smoothly.

It starts with a party at Will's apartment, and the interactions in those scenes are stilted. It moves on from there with the staff chomping at the bit to report the news of bin Laden's death, a series of false starts as they wring their hands for confirmation. it doesn't help that the romantic triangle element (the show's real weakness) is doted in during this downtime. Eventually, we get to that historic announcement, and the show plays up the personal significance, this being New York. But there's never a crescendo. A lot of the writing here is obvious, stagey; which is a shame because it can also be very funny (Terry Crews again with the one-liners, and Will being high on pot brownies).

I wanted to like this more than I did. It just never seems to get off the ground.
