In Avatar: The Last Airbender we learn that there have been thousands of incarnations of the Avatar (e.g. During "The Deserter" Avatar Roku states that he has mastered fire-bending one thousand times in one thousand lifetimes). If we assume the average lifespan of an Avatar is ~80 years (many lived to be well over 100, such as Kyoshi), this dates the origins of the Avatar to be roughly 80,000 years ago!
