Storyline

ALTERED CARBON is set in a future where consciousness is digitized and stored in cortical stacks implanted in the spine, allowing humans to survive physical death by having their memories and consciousness "re-sleeved" into new bodies. The story follows specially trained "Envoy" soldier Takeshi Kovacs, who is downloaded from an off-world prison and into a combat ready sleeve at the behest of Laurens Bancroft, a highly influential aristocrat. Bancroft was killed, and the last automatic backup of his stack was made hours before his death, leaving him with no memory of who killed him and why. While police ruled it a suicide, Bancroft is convinced he was murdered and wants Kovacs to find out the truth.

Trivia

Showrunner Laeta Kalogridis talked to Entertainment Weekly about the fight scene between the totally nude Rei and Ortega. "Societally we associate female nudity with shame, vulnerability, and with sex. In this sequence, I wanted to do an expression of something that isn't often associated with female nudity in the present day United States, and that's power; not sexual power, but physical ownership of the power of your body in a way that women are not really allowed to show. In our story, Meths [wealthy people who live hundreds of years by occupying new bodies] believe they have become gods. You want to buy in this scene that Reileen feels like a god on every level, right down the point where you can't kill her. Every time you kill her, she comes back, and she comes back perfect each time. Dichen is a mom and an incredible consummate professional actor who trained herself to the point where she felt on every level that she was otherworldly. What's terrifying and beautiful about her is she's utterly un-self-conscious, and because of that, her power is even more striking. It's meant to be, and I hope that it is, something different than anything you've seen before." See more »

Goofs

In the opening credits of season 2, it says 'based on the book by Richard K Morgan', and the only other clue to hang this on is that the production is called Altered Carbon; however, season 2 is actually based on an amalgam of the books entitled Broken Angels and Woken Furies, respectively, and does not cover any material described in the book entitled Altered Carbon. an absolute must see and read
19 September 2020 | by sheva030See all my reviews

The score is based solely on the quality of season one. You can really skip over the secound season, cause the series is cancelled anyway and the story and casting is awful. My suggestion, and if you like this genre you won't regret it, find and read the ALTERED CARBON novel and its two sequels. Then you rewatch the series or just watch it if you hadnt, you are gonna enjoy it so much more and understand the difference and reasons why S01 is so awesome, as well as, way S02 sucks!! Really hope you go with it
