Sex & Nudity

  • It's implied that people are looking at pictures of 2 people having sex. We do not see these pictures.
  • Throughout the series we see several pieces of art with some nudity though not graphic or explicit.
  • In the very first show they show you a deceased girl in the morgue and you can see one of her bare breast.
  • No explicit nudity, murder victims rear ends can occasionally be seen however hard to see as they're often in the dark and covered in blood.
  • Infrequent nudity in the series. Some bare butts and silhouettes of nudity, but it's heavily shadowed and/or out of focus. On broadcast TV, all nudity was censored though on streaming and DVD/Blu-Ray (most) nudity is uncensored.
  • Season 1: No sex scene at all. One kiss scene.
  • Season 2: 2 sex scene. Some kiss scenes.
  • Season 3: 2 sex scene. Some kiss scenes.
  • There are also sexual innuendos, some nudity and sometimes sex is talked about but this show has actually very few explicit things. The sexual/sensual intimacy and tension in this show are more mental and psychological than physical. It's very artistic.
  • There are two women laying on a bed, one of them is mildly naked. No explicit nudity. It is implied that they had sex.
  • Two murder victims are found deceased and semi naked in a motel room. Their bare backs are visible and nothing else as they are dead and layed on the bed. No buttocks or breasts or anything else seen.
  • A woman is seen in a bathing suit before she jumps into a swimming pool. Nothing else is seen.

Violence & Gore

  • Many closeups of syringes being injected into skin and scenes showing wounds being stitched up.
  • Many, many closeups of human organs being sliced and prepared to be eaten, often followed up by showing them being consumed.
  • Many scenes involving a huge amount of gore and plain disgusting imagery. Intestines spilling out, rotting corpses sprouting mushrooms, a swarm of bees with a nest inside a man's hollowed out skull.
  • Scenes depicting surgery, stitches, opening a ribcage, and cutting through flesh.
  • Many people are killed and wounded via gunshot, throats being slit, bludgeoned, stabbed, and gutted. All shown in great detail.
  • The series is about Will Graham and his ability to empathize with serial killers to a point he can recreate their violent actions in his imagination as part of criminal investigation. As a result, we see him acting out the murder's crimes on screen. Although these scenes are not completely shown, they could disturb viewers.
  • In the beginning of the series, we see Will Graham recreating the murder of two people in their homes. This scene is quite disturbing, but it sets the tone of the show very well.
  • One of the recurring themes are Will's vivid night terrors in which he has psychodelic visions, often disturbing if not just violent, due to his having to empathize with serial murderers.
  • There's several episodes, in which new killers are introduced. These killers are often one-offs, but sometimes stick around for later appearances in the series.

Profanity

  • No strong language in the series at all.
  • Overall, this series features extremely infrequent profanity. "Damn" and "hell" have been used, but the strongest profanity has been "piss" and "bitch".
  • The collective use of profanity in the series is about only a handful in total.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A character takes Aspirin fairly frequently due to headaches.
  • Characters are shown drinking wine with dinner and whiskey while relaxing at home.
  • A character is given hallucinogenic tea under a psychiatrist's supervision. When asked about her unnaturally calm state, the psychiatrist lies and says she was given half a Valium (a medication that helps anxiety temporarily).
  • Reference is made to a killer who uses a heroin overdose to kill his victims. One such victim is revealed to survive this on account of a former drug habit.
  • Other substances are used within medical situations as well as crime situations. In most of the crime situations they are used to drug victims.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • This show is extremely disturbing and gruesome, featuring countless amounts of bizarre and disgustingly graphic murders in almost every episode, and incredibly detailed and graphic gore. The violence is mainly limited to the aftermath of murders, and it is presented in a very cold and clinical way, and so the emotional weight of the violence is usually kept at a minimum.
  • One of the main antagonists of the series, Mason Verger, is a complete and utter monster. He is sadistic, depraved and vile. Every scene with him is unsettling and disturbing, and will most likely unnerve many viewers.
  • almost every episode has a gruesome murder scene its very disturbing. definitely only for adult audience
  • A man is known to be a sadistic pedophile and rapist who has sexually assaulted his sister. While nothing graphic is actually shown, scenes showing him creepily interacting with her and a child are present.
  • Rated TV-MA for strong disturbing violence and gore throughout, drug content and some sexuality.
  • The entire series is intense by nature due to its subject matter being psychological horror. The series carries surreal imagery throughout, which might enhance the disturbing atmosphere of the show.
  • Most of the crimes contain violence that is bizarre and/or aberrant, and there are gruesome and unsettling images throughout.
  • There are dream sequences that might be disturbing due to the violent imagery portrayed in them. Some morbid moments early on, involving crime scenes and forensics, that may repulse some viewers.
  • The season two finale is particularly intense, and may be upsetting for most.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • Hannibal and Alana have sex, as well as Margot and Will; nothing extremely graphic though, it's mainly just close ups of their faces.
  • Season 3: The Red Dragon is often shirtless and it doesnt go any further than that or him in his boxers.
  • Nude corpses seen several times in various episodes. Details such as breasts, genitals, buttocks etc are not shown.
  • There flash backs of about 3 seconds max of Hannibal with his ex which includes only and only kissing.

Violence & Gore

  • There are two brutal fight scenes between Hannibal and Jack in the series.
  • The series' primary theme is the psychology of murder. It contains frequent and very graphic depictions of human dismemberment (usually after death) including the severing of human limbs, the tearing of flesh and the consumption of cooked human flesh.
  • Towards the end of season 2, a man high on a drug is shown cutting off parts of his face with a knife, then feeds the chunks to dogs gathered around him. He then proceeds to cut his nose off and eats it. This is done in dark lighting, so much of it is obscured. Very disturbing
  • A man is verbally harassed and intimidated then has his lips viciously bitten off before being burnt alive. This sequence is extremely graphic, disturbing, and shocking.
  • A woman's body is frozen and cut into cross section, showing her insides for an extended amount of time in great detail.
  • A man willingly eats part of his own leg, the stumps are shown.
  • Will Graham's psychologist, and the overall antagonist of the entire series, is Hannibal. We see him serving human meat to his dinner guests (unknown to them, and otherwise) throughout the show.
