Storyline

Will Graham is a special consultant with the FBI. He has a special gift whereby he can empathize with any individual and put himself in their shoes. This means he gets to help solve vicious murders, especially those involving serial killers, as he can profile the murderer - their method, motives and personality profile. For a particular case, the FBI also seek the help of Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a highly-respected psychiatrist. Will and Hannibal hit it off, and Will becomes a patient of Hannibal. Little does he know or suspect that Hannibal might be the most wanted serial killer in the US. Written by grantss

Trivia

The role of Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier was originally written as a much older woman with Angela Lansbury in mind. When Lansbury could not accept the role due to conflicts with the Australian production of "Driving Miss Daisy", the role was rewritten for a younger actress and Gillian Anderson was cast. Goofs

The extensive, severe winter settings reveal the Toronto filming sites, rather than represent the Baltimore dramatic setting. Baltimore winters are mild, and snow rarely accumulates on the ground for more than a few days at a time. Yet snow covered landscapes and large accumulations of snow on the streets are common in the series, and there is snowfall to be seen through the window of Hannibal's dining room during nearly every meal. Dr. Hannibal Lecter: I've always found the idea of death comforting. The thought that my life could end at any moment frees me to fully appreciate the beauty and art and horror of everything this world has to offer.

Alternate Versions

US TV network versions aired censored versions of some episodes (removing, for example, rear nudity, paintings showing nude figures and some scenes of violence) with a TV-14 rating. These cut versions were released on Blu-ray in the UK, many of which received the more appropriate 18 rating from the BBFC. However, the American Blu-ray editions of the affected episodes are unrated and billed as Producer's Cuts, which restore the previously censored footage. See more »

Dark and better than I expected!
5 April 2013 | by msalmankSee all my reviews

I wasn't sure what to expect of this, and the preview/promo that I had seen didn't make me much excited about it. But honestly, I kinda loved the pilot and see a lot of potential here. Hugh Dancy is superb as Special Agent Will Graham and Mads Mikkelsen does justice to the role of Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Exceptional acting all around...

I've read a few people complaining of the series moving a bit too fast, but I found that not to be the case. The pace so far has been perfect and I certainly hope that it doesn't slow it down much.

For a moment, the first dream/killing sequence reminded me of another series (unforgettable) but Hannibal does these scenes in an extremely vivid and artistic manner that you just can't not love. The score is well selected and goes well with all the scenes.

Looking forward to seeing how the story pans out with time. And judging by the preview that they gave at the end of the first episode, I'm expecting I'll love it a lot more!

A must-watch for anyone who likes psychological thrillers.
