- King Bagsecg (James Cosmo) of the Vikings, leads his weakened army against the Saxons in 871 AD. As the violence escalates, Bagsecg's calls for re-enforcement, including his son Prince Steinar (Charlie Bewley). Steinar travels with a small band of trusted soldiers including Hagen (Clive Standen), Grim (Michael Jibson) & Jokul (Guy Flanagan). Steinar reaches his father only to find that the army was defeated in a battle & his father Bagsecg badly wounded.
Young Norse prince Steinar arrives in England with a complement of 500 reserve warriors to combat a Saxon uprising that is crushing the occupying forces led by his father, King Bagsecg. Arriving at his father's camp, Steiner attends a family meeting with his father, his older brother Harold, and their younger half-brother Vali, who is disliked by everyone but Steinar for being half Saxon. Absent is their older brother, Hakan, who has not been seen for over a decade due to a bitter animosity between him and their father, the cause unknown to Steinar.
Bagsecg, who is bedridden and dying, dreads leaving the throne to Harald (now next in line due to Hakan's absence) whose insistence that diplomacy, rather than being their best option, would instead put their clan under English rule. Bagsecg also wanted Steinar to kill Vali (Theo Barklem-Biggs), Bagsecg's stepson, who refused to pick arms in battle, to test his strength as a leader. But Steinar refuses to murder his half-brother.
Steinar wants himself to be proclaimed king, but a furious, Bagsecg dismisses Harold and Vali and charges Steinar with a near impossible task. Despite still harboring contempt for his eldest son, Bagsecg orders Steinar to venture deep into the hostile English lands to find Hakan (Elliot Cowan) and bring him back so he may assume the throne.
In the past, Bagsecg did not find Steinar's elder brother worthy of the crown. Hakan was banished by Bagsecg himself for being insane, but Bagsecg claims that the time has passed now. It is time for Hakan to return home.
The group decides to search for Hakan together & to find Hakan they must find Ivar (Ivan Kaye) who resides in the black mountains. Hakan and Ivar used to hunt together. When Hakan was banished, Ivar was not tolerated either, and he went looking for Hakan.
However, Steinar's elder brother Harald (Finlay Robertson) is angry at the decision & when Steinar leaves, he goes to meet the Saxon king & makes a deal with them to become King of Vikings when Bagsecg is dead. This news is brought to Steinar by Vali, the stepson of Begsecg. Steinar allows Vali to ride with him in search of Ivar, as it was too dangerous to leave him with Harald, who wanted to kill Vali as per Bagsecg's wishes. Despite the urgency to return, Steinar pushes forward.
Steinar wonders why Bagsecg banished Hakan and now wants to make him King. They leave Vali with their horses at the edge of the Black Mountains & enter the Mountains & find Ivar. Steinar defeats Ivar in a game of arm wrestling & in return Ivar agrees to take them to Hakan. Ivar brings along his slave Agnes (Alexandra Dowling) for the journey. When the group returns to Vali, they find all the horses dead, which Vali says is the work of thieves, but not a scratch on him.
Further on, the group is attacked by a well-trained company of Saxons & Grim dies while battling them. Later Hagen finds a Saxon coin dropped by Vali & thinks that Vali might be leaving markings behind for their enemies to follow, which is how the Saxons were able to ambush them. Steinar knows that if Harald made a deal with the Saxon King, then killing Steinar would be part of the deal. Steinar refuses to believe that Vali betrayed him, as his mother is also a Saxon. But as they are debating this, the group is again attacked by the Saxons & this time the Saxons capture them.
Saxon's leader tries to interrogate Steinar, but the Saxons don't kill the Vikings. Revealed to be soldiers of the Christian faith, their captain confirms that Harald has been secretly negotiating a surrender, on condition he remains in power over his people. But the captain proposes to Steinar that he would be best suited to rule his clan, if he would agree to submit to Christianity. Steinar refuses, knowing the stranglehold Christians would have on his people. Vali, however, switches sides to save his own neck and is taken to a nearby church, while Ivar is castrated for biting off the ear of a soldier. Steinar is rescued by Agnes, who had escaped by hiding when the Saxons attacked. Steinar in turn rescues the rest of his team. Ivar dies from his multiple wounds but points Steinar in the direction where he can find Hakan.
Hagen locks up the captured Saxons in a nearby church and burns down the entire building. Hagen & Jokul plead with Steinar to kill Vali so that the Gods will look favorably on them for the rest of their journey, but once again Steinar refuses. Hagen fights Steinar & eventually Steinar kills Hagen.
Now down to four, they head into an eerie forest and are captured again, this time by a tribe who dwell deep within a nearby cave. Taken there, Jokul is killed and later served up as the tribe's banquet, Vali again switches sides, while Agnes is claimed by the tribal chief, Steinar's older brother Hakan, who the tribe worship as a god.
During the tribal festivities, Steinar encounters his mother Astrid (Glynis Barber), whom he believed dead, and who is also deluded by Hakan's megalomania. Further shocking revelations are made as Steinar finally learns the truth behind Hakan's exile. To his disgust, his mother and brother openly share a passionate kiss, revealing their incestuous relationship.
After Hakan kills Vali to further his dominance over the tribe, he and Steinar are lowered into a dark pit to fight to the death. Despite Astrid secretly handing Hakan a knife to win, Steinar emerges the victor. The tribe bow in submission while Astrid, in an attempt to kill Steinar, is thrown into the pit by him.
Steinar later returns to Bagsecg's camp with Agnes and presents Hakan's head to his father. Harold argues he was supposed to bring Hakan back alive. But Bagsecg responds "He was sent to find a king" seeing that Steinar is now ready to lead their people and gives him full command of the Nordic Army.
Steinar then kills Harold for his treachery and weakness, much to Bagsecg's applause who can now rest easy knowing the kingdom is in good hands. Later, with Agnes by his side who is now his wife and queen, he musters his army to confront the approaching Saxon forces which he orders to charge with him leading it.
