Christmas with the family
"A Phineas and Ferb Family Christmas" is not the first Christmas themed 'Phineas and Ferb' episode. "Phineas and Ferb Christmas Vacation" came before it, which in my view was wonderful and more proof that Christmas and animation mix together like for instance red wine and steak beautifully. The idea for "A Phineas and Ferb Family Christmas" sounded quite nice, though the show's celebrity guest stars have varied a bit, and very 'Phineas and Ferb'.
It struck me as a nice episode and it is better than its rating suggests. It is far from being one of the best 'Phineas and Ferb' episodes and is definitely not as good as "Phineas and Ferb Christmas Vacation" in my view when it comes to comparing the Christmas themed episodes. "A Phineas and Ferb Family Christmas" is nonetheless fun and charming and has a lot to like about it, while not one of the must watch 'Phineas and Ferb' episodes it is still recommended.
Perfect "A Phineas and Ferb Family Christmas" is not. Story-wise it is quite thin, with the Doofenschmirtz subplot being the closest the episode gets to having one. That subplot was fun to watch and made me smile, but is formulaic and lacking in imagination. Not one of Doofenschmirtz's best schemes.
While liking Kelly Clarkson as a singer, her guest appearance doesn't really add very much other than to show off her voice to the point where the point of her is questioned.
Despite all that, there is a lot to like here in "A Phineas and Ferb Family Christmas". It is very well animated once again. Vibrantly coloured and the backgrounds has lovely attention to detail. The music is dynamic with the action and the theme song is insanely catchy with very clever and quotable lyrics that anybody still in school fishing for how to spend their vacation will relate to.
Much of the writing is a winner. It is intelligent and mature, even if not as witty as other 'Phineas and Ferb' episodes, and any sweet moments are genuinely so and not in a too sentimental way. Story is lively in pace and also very charming and heart-warming, the entertainment value is constant. The spirit of Christmas is nostalgically done. Had very little problem with the character writing, the interaction between the characters (all having something to do, and their roles are interesting and balanced well) or the voice acting.
In summation, good if not great. 7/10.
