Nica's lesbian masterpiece casts its spell over me
Nica Noelle has become my favorite contemporary director of features: now I've seen about 105 of her perhaps 300 works to date. This third entry in her "Babysitters" series is a porn classic, hiding in plain sight.
It's lack of fame is perhaps inevitable, since Nica works almost exclusively in generic titles with numbers at the end: "My Mother's (this or that)"; "My Sister's (this or that)" or more recently "TS (this or that)". I can't complain - I believe you have to watch a film or video in order to discover it and comment upon it, and that's exactly what I do in my own seemingly random way.
Further hiding its identity, Nica has not cast any of her oft-used superstars: no Julia Ann, no Lisa Ann, no Kylie Ireland this time out. Instead she has two workhorses of immense talent as the "olders": Michelle Lay and Zoey Holloway, matched with two up and coming starlets of its day (2010 shoot): Sammy Grand and Kasey Chase.
This four-character sleeper demonstrates less is more: a simple, direct premise linked to the lesbian theme, absent of bombast or pretension. Acting and sexual performance is near-perfect: understated but forceful. The direction is invisible. Even the running time of under 2 hours is in stark contrast to the bloated lengths typical of lesbian porn of the era, namely the standard 3 hours or more pioneered by Nica's old stomping grounds, Girlfriends Films.
Zoey and Michelle are a contented lesbian couple, the only issue here (and still a timely one for all couples in the marriage for all world of today) being that Zoey is a housewife while Michelle is the upwardly mobile breadwinner.
Picture opens with Zoey doing routine housework while Michelle home after work merely lazes about. They have (unseen) kids - presumably young teenagers, only a Brittanny is mentioned, but their former babysitter Dawn has gone away to college. Lay suggests they hire a new sitter, who can also help Zoey out with light cooking and cleaning chores. Nina does not overemphasize the point, but I got the impression in the opening scene that partner Michelle was (like so many men in our society in a similar role) not rushing to pitch in and help her mate in these matters.
The duo have a heartfelt, realistic sex scene to set the show in motion, and fans will recognize how natural they both are - no fake orgasms, no posing in positions for the camera -just sensual, arousing sex preserved for the voyeur.
Kasey Chase is the prospective babysitter, and she's a terrific find - and Nica knows it, featuring her in 3 of the feature's 4 sex vignettes. She also was appealing in Nica's other lucky #3 episode of her coterminous "Lesbian Hitchhiker" series. Suffice it to say that this talented actress is a Kristen Stewart type, but much prettier than that mainstream star.
Kasey tells her lover about the new job and then they make love. Woman in question is young Sammy Grand, a personal favorite of mine ever since I discovered her (and Nica) in Noelle's ante bellum opus "Family Secrets" starring Sean Michaels. Sammy has beautiful natural breasts and pink nipples, a winning personality and an unusually full "hair down there". Her sex scene, especially with its subtle but telling occasional rear-view shots, is warm and arousing. Unfortunately, Sammy flopped in porn, and hopefully is off doing something more rewarding with her life.
Kasey shows up for her job interview with Zoey, and a couple of glances/stares later it is clear that Z is smitten with the girl. However, instead of cutting to the chase - Nica could easily have had them immediately hook up & hump then and there, scene shifts to Kasey on the job sorting her new employers' laundry, sniffing at their panties (could be either Michelle's or Zoey's) and masturbating tastefully (shot strictly soft-core). With a musical cue and dissolve, she fantasizes having sex with Zoey in a lovely scene that also makes sense from the characters' points-of-view: they alternate taking the lead but both have believable orgasms in what is fantasy but seems oh-so realistic on screen. Afterward, we're back to reality and Kasey masturbating alone on her bed in a shot that pleasantly reminded me of the similarly soft-core but highly erotic masturbation scene of Peggy Church in the classic "The All-American Girl".
Finale is truly a classic vignette, showing many of Nica and her cast's strengths. Zoey is chatting with her new sitter, and Kasey confesses she has a crush on her new employer. When she snatches a quick kiss Kasey is immediately rebuffed and told off concerning her inappropriate behavior. Meanwhile, Lay has just come home from work and is eavesdropping on the conversation. Michelle's expressions and silent takes are priceless, nearly campy as she reveals her reactions to this encounter. She sneaks out and then pretends to arrive (slamming the door) later on, after Zoey has fired Kasey.
What follows some days later is Zoey depressed afterward, and Michelle tries to cheer her up with a surprise. Taking her mate to their bedroom, she unveils Kasey waiting there in a sexy negligee - a present for Zoey! The threesome have a slow-build sex scene together, mainly worshiping Zoey but later giving some loving older/wiser attention in tandem to the scrumptious youngster - a guaranteed turn-on for the fans of lesbian cinema. I was thrilled, and am looking forward to discovering the inevitable "answer film" hiding away in the Girlfriends Films' catalog from two or three years ago - they are competitive and have an unbeatable talent roster to handle this type of material with aplomb.
