In a Cage was based on actual events. Those actual events were what Screenwriter and Executive Producer, Candy J. Beard had witnessed as a teenager while living with her mother and stepfather in Albertville, Alabama, which is located in the Northern part of the state. Candy witnessed her stepfather beating her mother on a weekly basis, and many times had to call the Police for help. Some of the dialogue spoken from Melissa Chapman's character (Neighbor, Brandy) was based on total truth, from Candy's memory.
In a Cage was the work of a first time Executive Producer (Candy), a first time Film Director (Naga), a first time Cinematographer (Charles) and a first time audio specialist (Elliott) and produced on a micro budget in just eleven days (weekends only) from September through November 2011.
Screenwriter, Candy J. Beard penned the script for In a Cage in just two weeks in 2011. And though it was not her first screenplay, it became her first produced feature film.
The two actors who played Police Officer Phillips and Officer Smith (Anthony LaManna and Eldar Souliaev) were actually, in real life the very best of friends. EP and Casting Director, Candy J. Beard actually had no idea when she cast these two men to share a scene together, that the men even knew one another much less that they were best buddies. She found out the day of filming when they got to set.
Filming for In a Cage wrapped up in late November 2011. By the time it was halfway edited, it was discovered that some of the files had been corrupted. Luckily the only scenes that were corrupted involved only lead actors, Paisley Blackburn and Christopher Hunt. EP, Candy J. Beard reached out to the actors and asked if they would return for some re-shoots. It was hectic trying to line schedules up to make re-shoots possible, but finally, in June of 2012, Candy and Daniel made it happen. It was a true blessing that the trailer used for Kristy and Robert's residence in 2011 just happened to be vacant and the owner allowed them back in for re-shooting the scenes.
