A journey to the biggest open mining of the contemporary age. It's 1978 and friends Juliano and Joaquim leave Rio de Janeiro in search of their dream of striking it rich. Like thousands of other men, both get to the Amazon Rainforest full of hope and illusion. But routine in the mines changes everything and the obsession of wealth and power destroys them. Juliano becomes a gangster. Joaquim leaves all his values behind. This is a story about golden fever, greed and violence, a great friendship and its end.Written by

It's not the heavy dose of violence, the steamy sex, or the vast human spectacle of thousands of miners slaving for gold, that lingers in my mind after viewing this smart, well-told story; it is the excellent acting of this stellar cast. Wagner Moura is typically terrific here and continues to display his very broad range of acting skills. Matheus Nachtergaele is always excellent, too. I was most impressed with Juliano Cazarré's fabulous performance. But all the actors excelled. And the direction by Heitor Dahlia was deft. This is a strong Brazilian film and I am chagrined that there are not more "critic reviews" for this gem.
