This film is gripping, beautiful, heartbreaking, and illuminating. The story is handled with care, the characters shine, the setting is dynamic and the moments captured are impactful. I love that the film includes many powerful Pakistani women including a newspaper publisher, a political advocate, an investor and more.
The choice to make the story from the perspective of an investigative journalist was inspired. It made the heavy topic of the murder of a child who experienced and then advocated against child labor engaging.
Gunjal doesn't serve up easy answers or pretend to know all of the answers. And in that way it finds a story that rings with truth.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this movie but it captured me from the beginning with its beautiful cinematography then drew me in with the story. Just when I thought I knew where it was going, it shifted and added a new and compelling layer. What I loved most is that it gave me knew ways of looking at the issue of child labor and economic development around the world - not just in Pakistan, but in a global sense. As easy as it would be to think this is an isolated problem, it faces all countries. I admire the courage and honesty it takes to pursue such a story in one's own backyard. But simply, it was a beautifully told story about the complexities of human nature, the choices that confront us and who we'd like to be in the world vs who we really are, as well as the larger world we live in itself. Done with compassion, grace, but also a fierceness. Finally, not to miss the symbolism of the title. We live in complicated times where we want there to be clear good and evil, but the reality is so tangled. Somehow, I still felt an element of hope, at the end of the movie in spite of the fact that we face unsolvable and perennial problems. A reminder that there will always be people willing to fight, to speak up, and to tell stories. I'm so glad I got to see the film.
I wish we can make and promote more movies like these. The movie has stayed with me ever since I watched it. What a quality work. Ahmed is just phenomenal and so are the other cast members. From Irfan Masih role to even the policmen role, everybody played it very well. They story was true so the justice was done by filmmakers in a great way. Hope to see more of such Cinema in Pakistan. The cinema will grow and mature from such movies. Despite no marketing this movie can promote its idea in various ways. I wish industry encourages such movies in more celebrated ways. We should be proud to have such film makers in Pakistan.
