- When several dysfunctional and unpublished writers accept young Hannah (Kaley Cuoco) into their clique, they don't expect her overnight success. Hannah has just taken some writing classes and has never even read a novel. Hannah doesn't know anything about writing at all.
Colette Mooney (Teri Polo) receives rejection letters galore from agents and publishers. Her husband, optician Alan (Dylan Walsh), speaks ideas into a hand-held recorder all day long, but never acts on them. Alan considers himself the leader of the group. One of Alan's ideas is a romantic novel on 2 people who could not remain friends, and could not become lovers, so became FreVers.
Collete and Alan decide to create a video documentary of their Authors Anonymous group. The group meets every Tuesday night, mostly at Alan and Colette's place. The writers read their passages to the group and encourage commentary on their work. Alan says that all the group members were his patients and that's how they met. He claims that he started the group to help Collete.
Colette writes sexually stimulating novels using all kinds of double meaning words to describe genitalia and the process of sex. Collete struggles to develop well though out characters.
Henry Obert (Chris Klein) has writer's block, as well as a huge crush on Hannah. He delivers pizzas and cleans carpets for a living. Henry has 2 unpublished novels & is trying very hard to work on a 3rd called "Pizza to go". He has written only 100 pages so far and is hopelessly stuck. Henry was on course to attend college on a full football scholarship, but right before the start of the season, he blew his knee out, ending his professional sports career. Henry took English in college and decided to become a writer. Henry wants to ask Hannah out on a date. Henry maintains a wall of all the rejection letters ever sent to him.
While a Tom Clancy aspiring, John K. Butzin (Dennis Farina), resorts to self-publishing in a delusional quest to become a best-selling author, helped by a young hardware store employee named Sigrid (Tricia Helfer) who believes in him.
William Bruce (Jonathan Bennett) considers himself a ladies' man & is a fan of writer Charles Bukowski. He believes he is the only true writer of the group.
Hannah, who has rarely even read a book, let alone written one, not only manages to land a literary agent named Brian to represent her, but she also cashes in on a deal to turn her first manuscript into a Hollywood film. Hannah had recently moved to LA from Arizona with her mother. Hannah had just taken a few writing classes before she began writing full time. Hannah is writing a novel using a metaphor, called "Sleeping on the Moon", but struggles to explain what a metaphor is. She even struggles to remember the last name of Jane Austin, whom she has heard is a great writer.
The support of her weekly writer's group, Authors Anonymous, quickly turns to resentment. Collete and Alan assume that Hannah slept with Brian to get her book deal. The event also pushes the entire group into a frenzy of activity. John Butzin signs a deal to pay a shady publisher $250 to publish his novel in desperation. But the publishing house messes it up by printing the wrong picture on the cover. William starts to listen in to people's conversation at cafes to get ideas for his story-line in the novel
Some random agent David Kelleher (Jonathan Banks) is visiting Alan's optometrist shop & Alan decides to use the opportunity to introduce Colette to David. Colette gives David the manuscript of her novel. David is polite but throws the novel on his way out of the shop.
In time, Hannah realizes that maintaining a relationship with these people is next to impossible but does what she can to at least encourage Henry to begin writing again. Henry understands Hannah has no appreciation for other writers and helps her read up on his favorite novels. In turn Hannah gets close to Henry & she even lets him kiss her. Hannah does tell Henry that she is not looking for anything serious & wants to be friends with him.
John finds & tells the group that Hannah a landed a 6-figure movie deal for her first-time script. This blows everyone in the group into full on depression. William asks $5000 from Colette, and she demands that he has sex with her. Alan finds out & is angry with Colette. John resorts to a book signing event at Sigrid's hardware store & gets no takers.
Alan decides to kick William out of the group. William calls everyone a loser before he leaves and says that Henry is the only talent in the group but is head over heels in love with Hannah.
The group goes out to a book signing by Richard Broadwell, Henry's favorite author. Richard gives no-one any attention but asks Hannah out for a date. This makes the group even more jealous of Hannah and makes them believe that her success is because she is dishing out sexual favors. Sigrid buys John's books from her store secretly, to boost John's confidence.
Colette shamelessly pursues agents & lands a co-author deal when one agent identifies her spiritual guru (whom Colette takes along) & gives him a book deal and Colette a co-author deal. Delivering pizzas, Henry finds that Hannah is sleeping with Richard Broadwell.
At the next group meeting, the group breaks up when Hannah announces that she is leaving the group as Richard is now mentoring her. John also leaves the group & Alan divorces Colette. A few months later Henry attends Hannah's book signing. She is still with Richard.
David Kelleher narrates a story where he orders a pizza and Henry delivers it. Next week his wife asks for carpet cleaners and same guy shows up. David talks to him & Henry offers him a discount on carpets if David reads 10 pages. Before David knows it, he has read the entire novel & signs Henry.
