- Wes Neal (KJ Apa) was in military prison for six months after he was challenged to a street race for money. The race too place on the Fort Riley Base, where he was arrested. All his VA benefits are forfeited due to a bad conduct discharge from the military. Wes decided to race professionally after his release. He had always been passionate about racing, and now that he had no choice, he decided to take the chance. With only a few dollars to his name, Wes drove to Austin in search of his estranged father, Dean Miller (Eric Dane). Dean was a motorcycle racer, and he had dedicated twenty-five years of his life to his craft.
Dean was awkward at first when Wes introduced himself. He was afraid of having to have a difficult father-son conversation, but Wes had no such expectation of Dean. All he wanted was his guidance as he went into professional racing. Dean thought it was too late for Wes to start his racing career. As a professional racer, he knew that the sport required too much of a sacrifice, and he was afraid that his son was not cut out for it. Dean says that Wes needed to be much more disciplined to survive on the track. In the couple of trial runs, Wes was impatient and reckless, leading to him sliding off track.
But Wes did not give up because he believed racing was the only way he could redeem himself. He was broke (with $76 in his bank account), and he possessed no other skill to earn a living with, so racing was his best bet. Dean realized the urgency of his situation and finally agreed to help his son out. Dean was still the flamboyant man he used to be in his 20s. He spent most of his day drinking at the stripper club. Clearly, he was not living the life he thought he would when he left Dean's mother. After moving to Austin, Wes took an interest in Camila. She worked at the local diner, and he soon asked her on a date. She was a little concerned when Wes mentioned that he was into motorcycle racing, but she loved everything else about him and decided to give their relationship a chance. Camila was a single mother, and even though it came as a surprise to Wes, he was happy to include Leo in their dates. Abel is the owner of the bike store (Legacy Speed Shop) where Dean works as a mechanic and Abel offers Wes a job at the front end in sales. Dean and Abel had been working together for decades and Abel agrees to sponsor Wes.
The awards in Dean's showcase had collected dust, and he was not financially well off. Dean helps Wes build a new bike and teaches him how to ride it. The bike has a lower horsepower and Dean teaches Wes to win the corners and not the straights. When Wes won the Novice Middleweight Twins race under Dean's Mentorship, Dean realized that he could live his dream through Wes. Instead of considering the path best suited for the amateur racer, Dean pushed Wes to aim high. He was already thinking about the six-figure contracts that Wes could bag if he raced professionally. Wes still did not see Dean as a father, but only as his trainer.
Wes had only participated in one race, and he was hesitant about taking a big leap immediately after, but he did not wish to let Dean down. Dean wanted Wes to ride a more powerful bike, but Wes complained about not feeling confident. Dean did not care and encouraged Wes to leave his job at Abel's store and dedicate all his time to training.
Unfortunately, during the race, Wes' competitor, Cody (Austin North), ran him off the track intentionally, and Wes missed the trophy by a mark. Dean got into an argument with Cody and his trainer & owner of Farell Performance Bobby Tresco (Jackson Hurst). Wes got involved in it as well. The argument escalated into a fight, and his sponsor, Abel (Edward James Olmos), decided to drop Wes and Dean as their antics were bringing bad reputation to the shop.
Abel and Dean went way back, but he was tired of putting up with Dean. He blamed Dean for destroying his career after suffering an injury instead of healing and making a comeback. He knew Dean was a terrible influence on Wes, but he could not do much about it. Dean asks Wes to quit the shop and live with him. Dean was responsible for the distance between Wes and his lover, Camila (Maia Reficco). He wanted Wes to focus solely on his career, and he believed romance was a distraction. He feared Wes would become a family man and abandon his newfound passion and the chance to earn fame and money. Camila had just started dreaming about a future with Wes when she found out from Dean that Wes had been in prison for six months. She was shocked when she saw Wes get into a physical fight with his competitor Cody, and she decided he was not safe for her son to be around. Wes and Camila got into an argument after Dean convinced Wes that starting a family was not a great idea. They part ways.
Dean had abandoned Wes' mother back when she had decided to keep the baby. He was 21, and he refused to be tied down. He had spent all his life staying away from meaningful connections, and when he realized that his career was over, he became an alcoholic. Wes gradually figured out that his father had taken control of his life. He accused Dean of using him to reach his goals and dreams, and his father was furious. He punched Wes and asked him to leave his house, though he soon regretted his actions. Dean had no choice but to admit that he messed up not just his career but also his chance of having a family to come home to.
Abel owned the Legacy Speed Shop, and he also sponsored motorcycle racers. He used to race when he was young, and he later became Dean's trainer. Abel saw a ray of hope in Wes when he first arrived, but he also figured out that his father would be a terrible influence on him. When Dean kicked him out of his house, Wes got into trouble (he burned Dean's bike) and ended up at the police station. Abel came to his rescue and offered for him to stay at his place as long as he needed. Abel had the discipline that Dean lacked. Abel missed his wife, Angie, whom he'd lost to a car accident. He regretted chasing glory instead of listening to his wife and starting a family together. He was afraid of becoming a father back then because he'd never had one to look up to. He continued to live with regret because life had taught him the importance of having a family. His only advice to Wes was to hold on to the things that he felt were worthwhile. Abel offered to let Wes race on his treasured motorcycle, and Wes was overjoyed.
Dean apologized for lashing out at Wes. He mentioned how deeply he hated his father, and he strongly believed he would have been a terrible father to Wes even if he had stayed. But he regretted the way he'd behaved with Wes and also his decision to walk away from his family. Perhaps things could have been different, but Dean believed that now that they had gotten over the tough conversation, they were free to begin afresh. Wes did not hold any grudges against his father. He understood his situation and was ready to give their relationship another chance.
Wes realized how his father was trying to control his life, and he missed the bond he shared with Camila. He was ready to be with her regardless of its impact on his career. He begged Camila to attend his upcoming race because he wanted her to be a part of his future. He apologized for not discussing his past, and he hoped that she would take him back. But Camila was afraid that he would be a bad influence on her son. He would be risking his life each time he raced, and she would worry for him always. This was not the life she had envisioned. The next morning, Camila had a change of heart when she saw her son playing with the toy motorcycle that Wes had gifted him. She realized that she wanted to be there for him regardless of his risky passion. She was in love, and she was not ready to let go of him.
Wes did not expect to see his father at the MWRA National Finals Race; he was surprised to find out Dean was competing. Wes was riding on a bike gifted to him by Abel. Dean explained that he was inspired by Wes, and he wanted to give racing another chance., Dean and Wes were leading the race, but it was Wes who emerged as the winner. Their personal relationship did not come between them during the race, and they both had their eyes only on the prize. Dean was injured after he fell off his bike, and as soon as Wes crossed the checkered flag, he drove back to check on his father. Thankfully, Dean only suffered a minor injury, and on his way to the ambulance, he looked at Wes with pride. He was happy that his son had defeated him and won the title. Dean entered the race to help Wes win fair and square. He knew Cody would play dirty again, and as an experienced racer, he could easily handle the threat.
Camila attended the final race and together they celebrated his win. Wes would not make the mistakes that Dean and Abel made when they were young. He had grown up without a father, so he knew the importance of family. As much as he cared about racing, hopefully Wes would not abandon his loved ones for glory.
