Trivia

Carla Gugino plays Assistant Director Karen Goodall. When introduced to Raylan, he is surprised by her last name. This is because Carla Gugino is actually reprising the character of the same name from her television series Karen Sisco (2003), which, like "Justified," is based on a character Elmore Leonard created. In her show, Karen worked in the Miami office, the same office from which Raylan was transferred in the first episode of this series. The character of Karen Sisco was also portrayed by Jennifer Lopez in the movie, Out of Sight (1998). See more »

'Cut Ties' has an interesting switch between Raylan and Art; the former taking an unusually diplomatic approach to his work, while the latter isn't afraid to dirty his hands. To see Art using his fists to extract information is completely unexpected, but it's a treat to see Nick Searcy (who's always been a likable presence on the show) go full badass.

Compared to the prior season, this has the air of one of the earliest episodes, centering on keeping witnesses safe in the Protection program. Low-key is a great way to describe it. The upside is adding the exquisite Carla Gugino as a like-minded tough marshal. Spices things up and it's a great hat-tip to her brief stint as Karen Sisco.

And just at the last moment, the episode takes a turn with the into of Ellstin Limehouse. Kinda hard to take a guy with teeth like those seriously, but Mykelti Williamson makes him just about as scary as Quarles.

This show's just a rogues gallery of buffet of solid character actors.
