His younger self appears, and the two men wrestle with the humiliation of Wilde's fall from celebrity to convict because he loved a man. The dialogue in the film draws heavily on Oscar Wildes own written word and famous quotations and as such the film can be viewed for much of it's running time as being in "his own words".

    Prisoner C33
Directed by Trevor Nunn. This is a one man play with Prisoner C33 (Toby Stephens) having a conversation with his younger self Oscar Wilde (Toby Stephens.)

Set in 1895 in Reading Gaol. Prisoner C33 is struggling to survive in a dinghy dark prison cell. He is a wretched man who refuses to acknowledge his identity as Oscar Wilde.

Prisoner C33 imagines a conversation with his surer, flamboyant, witty and younger self.

The conversation recalls the events that led to Wilde's imprisonment for homosexuality. His fall from grace and losing his family and freedom in the process.

This is a stark drama. With a running time of a hour, it is not too long and is elevated by Stephens dual performances.
