Las Vegas, Dec 20: American Olivia Culpo was crowned Miss Universe 2012 at a gala ceremony Wednesday.

Philippines' Janine Tugonon was adjudged the first runner-up followed by Venezuela's Irene Esser.

India's Shilpa Singh made it to the top 16 spot but failed to progress further.

Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes of Angola crowned Culpo as the new Miss Universe at the glittering ceremony held at Planet Hollywood casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

As many as 89 beauty queens from around the world descended on Las Vegas Wednesday night to compete for the title of Miss Universe.

In a new photo spread in Vogue Italia, the reigning Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes poses for a series of photos shot by photographer John Jansheski for the magazine's "Rebranding Africa" issue.

Lopes -- wearing a series of high fashion looks from Tom Ford and others -- strikes her poses in a schoolhouse. A fitting emblem of the tiara-sporting Lopes' goal to raise awareness about the future of Angola -- a former Portuguese colony -- which is currently recovering from a 27-year civil war.

Leila, 26, is the eldest of seven children who went on to study business when not busy with pageants. She is, according to Vogue Italia, contemplating a move to Brazil to pursue an acting career before returning to Angola to launch her own cosmetics line.

Christy Turlington Hosts Charity Film Screening

In an effort to raise awareness about maternal and child health, Texas Children’s Hospital and Every Mother Counts (Emc) teamed up last night, March 1, for a very special one-night event hosted by global maternal health advocate and founder of Emc, Christy Turlington Burns.

The evening included a reception screening of Turlington Burns’ first documentary, No Woman, No Cry, and a Q&A session with Dr. Mark W. Kline, physician-in-chief at Texas Children’s Hospital, chair of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and founder of the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative, Dr. Michael A. Belfort, obstetrician and gynecologist-in-chief at Texas Children’s Hospital and professor and chairman of the Department of Obstetrics at Baylor College of Medicine and Christy Turlington Burns. Special guests attending the event included Miss Universe 2011 and Miss Angola Leila Lopes, and Miss Teen USA 2011 and Miss Texas Danielle Doty.
