In 2004 physics professor Philip MacKenna was apparently abducted from a Paris-bound train. His journey was last minute, after a colleague was robbed, and witnesses at the time proved to be using false identities, suggesting a plot to kidnap him for his expertise. Now his wife is getting cryptic emails, impossible to trace, suggesting he is alive, but she has been holding back a secret. A tip off from a Whitehall mandarin leads the team closer to the truth.
On 17 February 2004, Philip MacKenna disappeared on a train to Dover. He was a university professor who was headed to France to deliver a lecture in theoretical physics - specifically, cold fusion. CCTV shows him leaving his seat and going through the door to the buffet car but he never got there. Someone had pulled the emergency stop and the suspicion is that he was snatched by someone and taken out of an exit door. His wife Bea MacKenna has been receiving anonymous notes with the author claiming to know what happened to him. The UCOS investigation leads them into the murky world of the intelligence community when D.A.C Strickland is contacted by a former colleague Stephen Fisher who seemingly tries to warn him off.
