Almost as soon as the Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher disembarks at Melbourne, she finds herself embroiled in a mystery. Between investigating a cocaine smuggling ring, a back alley abortionist, and the poisoning of a friend's husband, Phryne's life is one adventure after another; but of course, she finds time for a romantic encounter with a dashing Russian dancer.
The Honorable Phryne Fisher arrives in Melbourne hoping to start her life anew. Invited for tea, she arrives at her friend Lydia Andrews' house only to learn that her husband John was found dead that morning on the bathroom floor. Lydia is quite shaken by the whole affair and has no idea what has happened. The police suspect foul play and it's later confirmed that he was poisoned. Meanwhile, Phryne learns from Lydia's maid, Dot Williams, that a housemaid recently left the Andrews' employment - a vital clue that leads to the killer.
Modernly independent yet fashionable young woman Phryne Fisher comes to late 1920s Melbourne, Australia, where she soon finds murder and illegal activity mysteries to unravel.
