Storyline

The Bomber (2011) / (Russian language title: Ballada o Bombere) Storyline During World War II, a soviet aircraft crashes on Nazi-occupied territory. But the pilot Grivtsov and his beloved radio operator Katya miraculously survive. Another survivor is flight navigator Linko, who ejected from the plane. Each of them has to find his way and perform military tasks, return to his own forces and simply to stay alive. The situation becomes more complicated because of an act of sabotage, which has been committed before their take-off at the aerodrome. Honest Grivtsov gets on the bad side of the colonel of SMERSH by defending his friends. Instead of being granted a medal "Star" for his 100th flight, he is pronounced a traitor and is to be executed. Trivia

The squadron is flying the Tupolev Tu-2 bomber. It is considered by many authorities to be one of the best high-speed medium bombers of WWII, easily rivaling other comparable contemporary bombers, such as the Junkers Ju-88 flown by the Germans. Designed by Andrey Tupolev in the late 1930s when he was a political prisoner, its success is credited as one of the factors that led to his early release in 1944. See more »

Goofs

The main plot device, the deployment of a V-2 rocket to hit Moscow, fails because of several factors. It is implied that the story takes place during the summer of 1943. The V-2 was still undergoing tests, and the first offensive use was in September, 1944, a year after the appearance in the movie. Besides, with a range of 320 km, it wouldn't have been able to reach Moscow, which is about 620 km from the Bobruisk area. See more »

Very Interesting and Exciting Too
17 June 2013 | by jerome-walker-usaSee all my reviews

I just have three things to say:

It's available on Hulu for free in the USA! It was a pleasure (to have more Russian language material) to watch and listen and try not to look at the subtitles too often. (Of course I failed - I needed to look at the subtitles most of the time.

The story is very interesting and exciting too. If you are only vaguely aware of Hitler's betrayal of the USSR and not aware of the ensuing conflict within the auspices of WWII that it caused, it will be even more interesting as you see some of the aspects of the conflict, as well as life in the Soviet Army.

I loved for the reasons above. Oh by the way... I repeat: It's on Hulu in the USA for free!

Cheers, Jerry
