Goofs Corcoran and company are Irish immigrants working for the Metropolitan Police. The Metropolitan Police was formed by the state in 1857 as a counter to the pre-existing municipal police, and they were rival agencies. Irish immigrants worked almost exclusively for the municipal police rather than the Metropolitan Police, so it is highly unlikely that a Metropolitan Police precinct would would have been manned mainly by Irish.
