Casting Shadows portrays the internal struggle of a Korean-American woman living in the Californian suburbs. Longing to reconnect with the memory of her mother, Lillian idealizes Korea with an animated fantasy of an ancient folk tale. Her self-imposed isolation during this process in an isolating suburban world distances Lillian from her husband David. Although the already damaged relationship grows increasingly fragile, opening the door to a forgotten history shows Lillian how to tell her own story. She gains a voice as she infuses her relationship with David into her imagination. Lillian learns to explore her desires. Ultimately, the question remains, will rediscovering the past heal the present?
