'Songs for Amy', directed by Konrad Begg is a feel good love story inspired by the music scene of the west of Ireland. Set against the stunning backdrop of County Galway and crossing the Atlantic to New York, the story follows Sean O'Malley (Sean Maguire), a struggling Irish musician who writes an album for Amy (Lorna Anderson), the love of his life, in an attempt to redeem himself. Through his music, Sean deals with love, loss, friendship, fate, hope and unexpected turns, all with the help and hindrance of his misfit band mates. Written by Mairi McLellan
Lovely gentle film with a great soundtrack. The plot may be a little obvious and there's a few holes in it here and there, but there are some fantastically hilarious bits in it and some of the cinematography is stunning, possibly at the expense of some of Gavin Mitchell's best bits, which have been edited out. It's just a feel good movie with a happy ending and a great batch of songs.
Maguire is great at showing the frustration of his own mistakes and learned to play the guitar just for this role.
Ford Kiernan hams it up magnificently and has some of the best scenes, although his Still Game colleague Gavin Mitchell is also clearly enjoying himself in his role as the hotel manager.
