Lee Pace Fights Robotic Foreign Invaders in Trailer for the Sci-Fi Film Revolt

Lee Pace has played roles in some of Hollywood's biggest franchises like The Hobbit trilogy, Guardians of the Galaxy and now he's taking a leading role in an alien invasion movie called Revolt. The trailer looks like a cross between War of the Worlds and District 9. Revolt is helmed by first time director Joe Miale and is co-written by Rowan Athale (Wasteland)

SyFy Wire describes the plot:

Pace plays an American soldier in a war-ravaged African country who joins forces with a French foreign aid worker, played by Skyfall’s Berenice Marlohe, “amid humankind’s last stand against a cataclysmic alien invasion.” Their partnership will be tested when they seek refuge from the alien threat.

There is no U.S. release date yet.

This does look like an entertaining alien flick. It obviously doesn't look top tier, but sometimes these kind of movies are the most enjoyable. I know

Michael Bay producing Little America featuring a “Trump-like dystopia”

THR is reporting that Universal Pictures has won a bidding war for Little America, a new “sci-fun” tale set in a dystopian United States following a “Trump-like” presidency which has left the country bankrupt.

The project takes place in a future where China has called in its debts and now owns the USA, with many American having emigrated to China in search of work. In a plot reminiscent of Escape From New York, a former American Force Recon member is hired by a Chinese billionaire to go into an American ghetto to rescue his daughter.

Little America has been written by Rowan Athale (Wasteland), who is also attached to direct, while Bay will produce through his Platinum Dunes banner.

Universal Fights For Little America, And Wins It For Michael Bay

The pop culture response to the spectre of Donald Trump continues to build, with a fierce bidding war for a new film project culminating in a victory for Universal. The studio reportedly fought hard for the rights to Little America, and has now attached Michael Bay to produce the film – with writer-director Rowan Athale taking the helm.

This is a big moment for Athale, whose only previous credit is the 2012 film Wasteland (also known as The Rise), which he wrote and directed. That film saw a man seek revenge against a local drug kingpin, while trying to win back his girlfriend. Little America, it would seem, takes those same ‘male-hero/damsel-in-distress’ themes and builds upon them with commentary on the current political climate.

It is set in a dystopian future in which a megalomaniacal businessman has won the U.S Presidency, and has succeeded in bankrupting the nation after China calls in its sizeable debts.

If you're looking for escapist entertainment to avoid thinking about the current socio-political climate, Universal's upcoming dystopian action thriller Little America might not be it. 

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal just won the bidding war for Little America, the spec script written by Rowan Athale. Athale will direct the film, with Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes producing.

The premise of Little America? In a dystopian future where a "Trump-like" president has bankrupted the United States and China is calling in its debts, Americans begin immigrating to China to find work.

Hollywood is ready to cash in on people's fears of Donald Trump's presidency. Universal Pictures has just picked up the rights to a new film called Little America, which is described as a "futuristic adventure movie." Michael Bay will be helping develop the project as a producer and British filmmaker Rowan Athale (Wasteland) will direct from a script he wrote. 

THR describes the film as being a "sci-fun" story rather than a "sci-fi" story. They go on to offer the following story description:

Michael Bay Producing Dystopian Action-Thriller ‘Little America’ for Universal
Universal Pictures is developing the dystopian action-thriller “Little America” with Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller on board to produce through their Platinum Dunes production company.

Universal won a bidding war for a spec script by Rowan Athale (“Wasteland”), who will also direct. Platinum Dunes has teamed with Universal for “The Purge” and “Ouija” franchises.

“Little America” is described as being reminiscent of John Carpenter’s iconic 1981 sci-fi action-thriller “Escape From New York,” starring Kurt Russell. “Little America” is set in a time where America is so bankrupt that China is calling all the shots.

Anyone who’s seen Errol Morris’ documentary “Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr.” knows that the bizarre phenomenon of Holocaust denial can make for a strange, compelling movie. Mick Jackson’s “Denial” looks to be considerably more straightforward, but the prestige-picture-in-waiting does have the benefit of a standout cast: Rachel Weisz, Tom Wilkinson and Timothy Spall headline the drama arriving this fall. Screen Australia funds 12 film and TV projects

Simon Baker will make his feature directing debut, Matchbox Pictures will adapt another Christos Tsiolkas. novel for the ABC and Endemol Australia will produce a female-driven drama for the Nine Network in projects funded by Screen Australia.

Among other funding recipients are a TV spin-off of Tomorrow, When the War Began, a Nowhere Boys telemovie for the ABC and a relationships comedy directed by Tim Ferguson and Marc Gracie.

In total Screen Australia is investing $13.4 million in 12 film and television projects which will trigger production worth $64.3 million.

Baker (The Mentalist) will direct and star in the screen adaptation of Tim Winton.s novel Breath, scripted by Top of the Lake.s Gerard Lee.

The producers are Mark Johnson (Breaking Bad, The Notebook), Baker and See Pictures. Jamie Hilton (Backtrack, The Little Death).

Oap heist comedy Golden Years begins shoot
Exclusive: Bernard Hill, Virginia McKenna head MoliFilms comedy.

Principal photography is underway in the UK on comedy-caper Golden Years, produced by MoliFilms Entertainment executive Mark Foligno (Montana, The Rise).

Bernard Hill (Wolf Hall, Lord of the Rings) and Virginia McKenna (Sliding Doors, Born Free) star in the comedy heist film as a retired couple forced into a life of crime after they fall victim to the pensions crisis.

John Miller (Living in Hope) directs from a script he co-wrote with Nick Knowles and Jeremy Sheldon. It marks the feature debut of UK television presenter Knowles, best known for long-running BBC series Diy Sos.

Funding comes from MoliFilms.

Supporting cast includes Sue Johnston (Downtown Abbey), Alun Armstrong (Braveheart), Simon Callow (Four Weddings and a Funeral), Una Stubbs (Sherlock), Phil Davies (Vera Drake) and Brad Moore (The Rise).

Shoot will take place in Bristol and the Cotswolds during March and April.

For the second consecutive year, Warner Bros. Pictures International has exceeded the coveted $3 billion mark at the international box office. This benchmark comes on the heels of the release of The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, which surpassed $400 million at the international box office this weekend and is still going strong.

Plastic Review

Though Julian Gilbey’s comedy caper Plastic is somewhat undemanding, easy to indulge in entertainment, that’s all thanks to the exhilarating narrative at hand. Though given this quite incredible set of events are based on a true story, it means that writer Gilbey, joined by his brother Will and Chris Howard – cannot truly take the credit, as the film’s concept had been born out of genuine events. Ultimately, in this instance, it’s the execution of the story that is the film’s very undoing.

Montana sells to 14 markets
Exclusive: Salt inks multi-territory deal with eOne for action-thriller starring Lars Mikkelsen and Michelle Fairley.

UK producer Moli Films’ action-thriller Montana has sold to 14 territories for The Salt Company, including a multi-territory deal with distributor Entertainment One.

eOne has picked up rights in the UK, France, Germany, Austria, Iceland, Scandinavia, Switzerland and South Africa.

The deals were negotiated by James Norrie of Salt and Joel Kennedy and Jo Sweby of eOne, which will distribute directly in the UK and sub-distribute in the other territories.

Lars Mikkelsen (The Killing), Michelle Fairley (Game of Thrones), Adam Deacon (Anuvahood), Ashley Walters (Bullet Boy) and newcomer Mckell David star in director Mo Ali’s crime-thriller about a steely eastern European hitman who arrives in London to avenge the death of his family but is held up after stumbling on a 14 year-old runaway.

★★☆☆☆ The rollicking heist movie is one of those genres that can easily feel redundant nowadays. With elaborate plot machinations its central tenet, this specialist variety of thriller relies on having an original way to dupe its audience who will naturally be looking for clues towards some final act twist. Trying to find a unique spin on the material is director Rowan Athale, who brings to DVD and Blu-ray his debut feature in the form of 2012 British crime caper The Rise (formerly Wasteland). Whilst it's hurtling pace means it rarely bores, it is ultimately unable to find any innovation within the genre trappings and viewers will be far from fooled.

In The Rise, Luke Treadaway, Matthew Lewis, Gerard Kearns and Irwan Rheon play a group of close friends who plot a heist that will set them up for a new and more comfortable life. We recently sat down with Treadaway, Kearns and Lewis – Rheon was delayed getting to the interview venue, so we spoke to him separately – about heist movies in, getting to know one another and the shenanigans that happened on-set.

As in the film, the trio get on spectacularly well, with a constant level of matey banter. It certainly made the interview fun, although it also made transcribing it quite hard work. We began by talking about their favourite heist movie.
