While originally intended as a drama, the script underwent a "frantic" two-week rewrite to be remade into a comedy several weeks prior to filming.

On March 9, 2016, it was reported that Wadlow had exited the film and Patrick Hughes signed on to direct the film.

The "Who is more wicked" question Kincaid poses to Bryce may be a reference to Samuel L. Jackson's role in the Star Wars prequel trilogy (1999-2005), as this has very familiar wording to Obi-Wan Kenobi's question about "Who is more foolish" in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977).
