Lille, France — “My Life as a Zucchini” and “Revolting Rhymes” topped the first European Animation Awards in Lille, France, on Friday night, scooping best feature and best TV/broadcast production respectively.

Already scoring an Academy Award nomination, Swiss Claude Barras’ “My Life as a Zucchini,” a nonsaccharine, though stop-motion, portrayal of orphanhood, took three awards in all, more than any other title at Lille, winning for best feature animation, and also for its guitar soundtrack and writing, a win for Celine Sciamma, a distinguished director in her own right.

A two-part CGI special produced by Magic Light Pictures for the BBC and created by Magic Light Pictures in Berlin and Triggerfish Animation Studios in Cape Town, “Revolting Rhymes’” took the big TV award for its stylish dramatization of Roald Dahl’s poem reprises of traditional fairy tales. When Uncle Grandpa accidentally flips the multidimensional switch on his Rv, he creates a tear in the universe that collides the worlds of some of Cartoon Network’s most beloved shows… That’s the set up for Cartoon Network Battle Crashers, the side-scrolling, kid-friendly beat ‘em-up from GameMill/Maximum Games – which has, a year on from its initial release, made it’s Nintendo Switch debut.

So how does it fair on Nintendo’s hybrid console? Well graphically it’s not a game that’s ever going to push the limits of the system, however the bright 2D character design and the variety of landscapes really showcases the Switch’s screen. ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ Tops Studios’ TV Ad Spending

In this week’s edition of the Variety Movie Commercial Tracker, powered by the TV advertising attention analytics company iSpot.tv, Paramount Pictures claims the top spot in spending for “Transformers: The Last Knight.”

Ads placed for the fifth installment of the toy-spawned movie franchise had an estimated media value of $7.34 million through Sunday for 992 national ad airings across 38 networks. (Spend figures are based on estimates generated from June 5-11. Estimates may be updated after the chart is posted as new information becomes available.) Paramount appears to be targeting a millennial-skewing audience, with key ad placements during both “Tosh.0” and “The Amazing World of Gumball,” as well as during the NBA Finals.

Just behind “Transformers” in second place: Universal’s “The Mummy,” which saw 1,524 national ad airings across 62 networks, with an estimated media value of $6.55 million.

Turner said it has ramped up investment in European production by 30% in the past year and has also taken its biggest international original, “The Amazing World of Gumball,” in a new direction, with a puppet-based episode of the show that it will reveal at Annecy.

The puppet-based installment of “Gumball” will go out during season five of the show and also be the inspiration for a series of shortform spin-offs.
