Kennedy Center Honors: Our top 50 recommendations who need to be chosen include Dick Van Dyke, Liza Minnelli, Jessica Lange, Bette Midler

The next recipients for the Kennedy Center Honors will be announced in the late summer, often around Labor Day. The all-star event is held each year in the nation’s capital during the first weekend in December and then airs on CBS as a two-hour special after Christmas.

Each year, the selection committee chooses five entertainment veterans from a variety of fields – film, television, popular music, theatre, and the fine arts. Selected artists are almost always over 50 and generally are 60 and beyond.

The first recipients in 1978 were singer Marian Anderson, actor and dancer Fred Astaire, choreographer George Balanchine, composer Richard Rodgers and conductor Arthur Rubinstein. The most recent honorees in 2017 for the 40th anniversary program were dancer Carmen de Lavallade, singer Gloria Estefan, singer LL Cool J, producer and writer Norman Lear and singer Lionel Richie.

But there are a number of notable performers missing from the honors roll. Our

Oscars flashback: Daniel Day-Lewis (‘Lincoln’) sets record with 3rd win as Best Actor [Watch]
After his sweeping victory with “There Will Be Blood” in 2007, many thought Daniel Day-Lewis had reached his zenith. What could top that performance?

In 2012 he was given the title role in Steven Spielberg’s epic “Lincoln.” Once again he immersed himself in the role, spending an entire year on research of Abraham Lincoln alone. For this performance as America’s greatest statesmen, Day-Lewis became the first and only winner of three Best Actor Academy Awards, ranking behind only Katharine Hepburn for the most acting Oscar wins in a lead category (she has four).

Watch the video above as the only living actress with three acting wins, Meryl Streep, presents an emotional Day-Lewis with the trophy at the 2013 ceremony.

Robert Zemeckis (‘Forrest Gump’) has feather in his cap after being voted top Best Director Oscar winner of 1990s [Poll Results]
Mama always said Robert Zemeckis was the top Best Director Oscar winner of the 1990s for his work on “Forrest Gump.” Zemeckis was the top choice in Gold Derby’s poll asking you to vote for your favorite of the ’90s, and no other director came close.

Zemeckis won Gold Derby’s poll with an astonishing 49% of the vote, leaving everyone else in the dust. Steven Spielberg (“Schindler’s List”) came in second at 15%, while Jonathan Demme (“The Silence of the Lambs”) was the only other double-digit vote-getter at 10%. Rounding out the top five here were Spielberg (“Saving Private Ryan”) at 9% and James Cameron (“Titanic”) at 8%. Far below the rest we had Sam Mendes (“American Beauty”) at 4%, followed by Clint Eastwood (“Unforgiven”) at 2%. Three directors tied for last in our poll with 1% of the vote each: Kevin Costner (“Dances with Wolves”), Mel Gibson (“Braveheart”) and Anthony Minghella (“The English Patient

Denzel Washington (‘Roman J. Israel, Esq.’) earns his ninth Oscar nomination on the 30th anniversary of his first

Denzel Washington (‘Roman J. Israel, Esq.’) earns his ninth Oscar nomination on the 30th anniversary of his first
Denzel Washington earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor Tuesday morning for his performance as the title legal savant in “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” It’s a historic nomination for the veteran actor, and it comes at a meaningful time: it has been exactly 30 years since his very first nomination for “Cry Freedom” (1987).

Washington contended for Best Supporting Actor for that film, in which he played Steve Biko, a real-life South African anti-apartheid activist who was killed at age 30 after being held as a political prisoner. Since then the actor has racked up many more nominations, paving the way for a generation of black performers. That includes his current Oscar rival Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”), who wasn’t even born yet when Washington was recognized for “Cry Freedom.”

Washington’s first Oscar victory came just two years later, Best Supporting Actor for “Glory” (1989). He was only the second black actor to claim that award,

The Walk Image Reveals Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Wire Artist As The Real Skyscraper

Few filmmakers in the industry have an astute visual eye like Robert Zemeckis. With the likes of Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Flight cramming up his impressive and long-running résumé, the 62-year old director is one of the best in the business when it comes to special effects. So, it’s no wonder he was eager to step up to the plate to helm The Walk, the ambitious tale of Philippe Peti’st daring, death-defying stunt that would see the French wire artist walk the tightrope between the Twin Towers.

Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the renown daredevil, The Walk will see the actor walk across the skyline of Manhattan from an eye-watering 1,350 feet. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Zemeckis touched upon the emotional impact of rendering the Twin Towers on screen and how he wants to instil a palpable sense of vertigo for moviegoers.

“Re-creating the Twin

Joseph Gordon-Levitt walks a thin tightrope in 'The Walk' -- exclusive image
Seeing the World Trade Center again is bound to rouse strong emotions, but Robert Zemeckis' upcoming drama, The Walk, aims to make it nostalgic instead of distressing—like discovering a new photo of someone who's gone forever. The story is set nearly three decades before 9/11, and the tale is both true-life and death-defying. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Philippe Petit, the French high-wire walker who, in 1974, strung a cable between the two 110-story skyscrapers and walked across it, 1,350 feet above Manhattan. "Re-creating the Twin Towers in a photo-real way—only movies can do that," says Zemeckis (Flight). "The towers are definitely characters in the movie,

New Photo From Joseph Gordon-Levitt's The Walk, Directed by Robert Zemeckis

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we now have a new photo from "The Walk," which is directed by Robert Zemeckis (Flight, Forrest Gump, Cast Away) and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Check it out below. The new movie tells the story of French high-wire artist Philippe Petit's walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center on August 7th, 1974. The dangerous walk, called the "artistic crime of the century," was explored in the award-winning "Man on Wire" documentary. Much of the movie will be about how Petit managed with a small group of relatives and his girlfriend to carefully plan the walk, sneaking up to the top of the Towers at night. They hid until late evening when they strung a 450-pound cable from one building to the other. Petit then stepped off the South Tower for a 45-minute walk to the North Tower. The majority of the film plays like "Ocean's Eleven,

'Kong: Skull Island' Gains Jk Simmons

Thanks to his wickedly brilliant performance in Damien Chazelle's Whiplash, J.K. Simmons is finally getting the kind of exposure that he deserves. The actor has been cast in Legendary's Kong: Skull Island, which will tell the origin story of the king of apes.

Previously titled Skull Island, the movie will be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) and written by John Gatins (Flight) and Max Borenstein (Godzilla).

There are no details on what role Simmons will play, but our guess is he'll be part of the team of explorers (led by Tom Hiddleston) who travels inside the "treacherous, primordial island." Based on the talent alone, Kong is shaping up to be a major event. Both Simmons and Hiddleston are incredibly talented (and likable!) actors. We've also got a great writing team onboard, and a director with a fresh take on an age-old figure.

J.K. Simmons On For Kong: Skull Island

J.K. Simmons On For Kong: Skull Island
We’ve gotten used, in recent years, to the softer, more charming side of J.K. Simmons. Still, Whiplash, which arrives here early next year, promises to shatter that once more.
