A recently released ex-convict named Shadow meets a mysterious man who calls himself "Wednesday" and who knows more than he first seems to about Shadow's life and past.
Shadow is a man with a past. But now he wants nothing more than to live a quiet life with his wife and stay out of trouble. Until he learns that she's been killed in a terrible accident. Flying home for the funeral, as a violent storm rocks the plane, he is greeted by a strange man in the seat next to him. The man calls himself Mr. Wednesday, and he knows more about Shadow than is possible. He warns Shadow that a far bigger storm is coming. And from that moment on, nothing will ever be the same.
Shadow, an inmate to be released, is informed that his wife has been involved in an accident and was killed, also learning that she was involved in an affair with his best friend. On his way home, he's offered a job by a stranger on the plane.
American Gods follows Shadow Moon, a man serving three years in prison who is given an early release. Shadow Moon is hired as Mr. Wednesday's bodyguard and finds himself in a hidden world where a battle is brewing between the Old Gods and the New Gods.
After learning his wife was killed in a car-crash, ex-convict Shadow Moon finds himself under the employ of the elusive man known as 'Mr. Wednesday'. Unknown to Shadow, a war is brewing in America, between the Old Gods and the New Gods, and he's about to end up right in the middle of that chaos. 'Wednesday' is holding many secrets from Shadow even as the world around the ex-convict starts making less and less sense. The battle for the Gods of tomorrow has just begun.
