Storyline

A film about heavy music in the modern American South, as told by the very people who have created this music during the last two decades. Shot in back alleys, parking lots, and the seedy green rooms of the dirtiest clubs that the Bible Belt failed to snuff out, these die hard musicians discuss their love of music and the south, as well as the difficulties, contradictions, and insanity that haunt every southern artist. There are no illusions here, no apologies, no distractions - only the straight truth as told by those who would know the difference. Written by Nate Hall

Most entertaining documentary I have ever seen
4 October 2014 | by JizanthapusSee all my reviews

This 90 minute documentary takes the viewer on a journey through the South to hear local underground sludge metal bands from Florida, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia and Georgia. Filmed in 2009, the movie was released the next year, but only to a limited audience at film festivals and select independent theaters. After much anticipation it was uploaded to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDK6ECp-6Zc on September 5, 2014 and had over 43,000 views in the first month.

On their trip to Athens, Georgia, filmmakers David Lipke and Chris Terry interviewed Mark Moody while younger brother Vaughn lurked in the background. Mark is given a good amount of screen time, with a total of 7 interview segments sprinkled throughout the film.

Self described as "if Primus and Tool had an ugly baby," their band "In the Lurch" is shown on stage with Vaughn playing drums and Mark singing and playing bass. During a photo montage Vaughn is seen sitting in a car and waving at the photographer with one finger.

Nationally known acts Hank III, Corrosion of Conformity, Lamb of God, and Phil Anselmo from Pantera are also featured in the film.

Between clips of metal bands in live performances are interviews with topics as diverse as early musical influences, growing up in the South, life on the road, the Confederate flag, break dancing, religion, Hurricane Katrina, economic inequality, and gravy and sweet tea.

Other Georgia bands in the movie are Music Hates You, Jucifer, Subrig Destroyer and The Dumps, all from Athens; Kylesa and Black Tusk from Savannah; and Royal Thunder and Zoroaster from Atlanta.

As for my rating, I give the film two \m/'s up.

Luke Bryan was not harmed in the making of this film.
